According to police soruces, the ritos began as peaceful rallies demanding a comprehensive reform of the welfare state and taxation structures, but rapidly turned violent as frustration boiled over among members of the growing class of the poor and unemployed, driving them to attack shops and the homes of wealthier citizens. Police eventually dispersed the rioters at around 7:00 PM with tear gas and water cannons, but many of the groups involved have vowed to return by tommorow and continue the demonstrations.
