  • Setting immediate goals

We need to goal-set. It will give us something to aim at.
Goal 1: Get this project back on track. Continue discussions, and attrack new members.
Goal 2: Start programming again. Consolidate the work on the UI, and work on a game engine.

    What else?

    two suggestions

i personally became very frustrated with this project because of the following two things and just a general lack of time

    1) was a sense that no matter how much discussion of a topic occured that without the tools to implement those ideas i was basically a fifth wheel, and that i was wasting my time

so i suggest using an already existing engine and modding it, there are a number of already existing alt civ engines out there and some that are begining to come online, there are two new engines that look promising in the alt civ section and then there is freeciv and civ evo (http://www.c-evo.org) this could speed the project along and might be enough to breath some new life back into it

    2) was a sense that GGS was going from more in depth than Civ to so highly complicated that it would take a number of PhD degrees just to play the game, much less understand it

so i suggestion that models try to be made simpler, but still fun to play while achieving the basic goal of more realism (to me this would mean just more big fun decisions that have the flavor of real world activites)

this is only a suggestion since i no longer had the time to keep up with the models they might not be as bad as what i remembered

having said that i would still love to see this project get off the ground and turn into a vibrant game one day in the not too distant future

Well, I think they still are as convoluted and bizarre as they were last spring. There has been very little progress. I addressed the points of simplifying the models or the implementation in another thread... basically my opinion is that I enjoy fiddling with impossible things and I don't care if we ever get anything done. I may be alone with my opinion, but at least it is my own.

As for immediate goals, I've taken a resolution to start participating in the coding effort finally. If I could just get the current (well, it's not really "current", more like "ancient") code to compile, I'm sure the programming would progress somewhat... In terms of design, I think it'd be nice to finally reach a consensus about the map. No rush.
