A* is the most commonly used AI routine for path finding. It's a well proven method, and has been used in pretty much every turn based strategy game ever devised
It's a little slow sometimes, so it's not so great for RT stuff (although I understand that it can be optimized to run in real time if you have a few precomputations in place).
which is the AI section. There is even a part (toward the bottom) devoted entirely to pathfinding!
BTW, GameDev, flipCode, and Gamasutra are three sites every game programmer should know about. If you're serious about game design, you should be spending a fair amount of time at all three sites
