  • How many programmers do we have?

    I was just wondering...

Apart from Dan and Amjayee I have no contact with the programmers, so I don't really know how many there is.

Is Jacob and Vetlegion and the others still with us or what?

And since we have not settled on any design parts, I was also wondering what they were working on. I would like to know, as I have no contact with them at all.

    Danw is doing Multiplayer
VetLegion and amjayee are doing Drawing Graphics to the map
JacobH is meant to be doing UI, but has disappeared for the last month

they are the core programmers. others has come, and expressed interest, but then left.

We're currently doing some prototyping which will help us evaluate what can & can't be done in a reasonable time. Aside from that we're waiting for the designers to come up with a detailed basic design so we can start coding.

        Good to hear!

But I'm really sad about Jacob. Have you tryed mailing to him? Of cause if he doesn't want to take part of the project it's cool, but it would be nice to simply hear from him that he is not interested, in stead of just leaving.

I can program in theory, but my skills are somewhat limited, as is my time (I have more schoolwork than I care to think about )

            hmm, to update things

I am here, starting to be more available. Looking towards finishing the already far behind schedule frame system (basic MP, basic event system and basic models)

Chrispie I havent heard from a long time, but before that he did a part of multiplayer code (chat & connecting), UI and a crude hex map. crispie come back!!!

amjayee - working on a map(?)

leland - working on an event system(?)

darkstar - dont know. how are you standing with time?

rotem benzur - any free time?

Joker, heardie, Victor Galis, anyone thinks that he will do some coding?

well, I am bumping it so everyone is realistic about what to expect. and JacobH and DanW are long gone.

I can program a little if necessary.
If at first you succeed, you should be doing something tougher.

                good to hear that nath!

                how is your free time?

perhaps you can code a simple model? combat or something ..., or tech (I had a start at this once, I think we should describe tech in scripting language, so actually we need a scripting language definition and parser - I also had a go at that, but havent gone far) or anything else, if you have the will and free time.

There isn't much of it, unfortunately. I have exams rather often.

Perhaps, but probably not much in the near future. Could you email what's been done so far?

What exactly should the tech model do?
I've created a rough draft of a rough draft here (74.5 KB).

The test is based on Design Doc 0.3. None of the sciences and things were specified, so I made some up. The lists here are just what struck me while typing. They're just meant to show how the program works. They're not suggestions for the sciences, tech fields and milestones in the game itself.

                    SCIENCES:
(The numbers indicate how likely the science is to affect each field.)

                    Astronomy 0 5 0 5 0 0 0
                    Biology 0 0 0 0 4 3 3
                    Chemistry 2 1 4 0 0 3 0
                    Physics 3 5 3 3 0 0 0
                    Mathematics 2 3 2 3 0 0 0
                    Medicine 0 2 1 0 2 4 1
                    Geology 2 0 3 1 0 3 1

                    TECHNOLOGY FIELDS:
(All of the randomness is introduced at this level.)

                    Construction
                    Ship-building
                    Metallurgy
                    Cartography
                    Domestication
                    Agronomy
                    Woodworking

                    MILESTONES:
(The numbers to the right indicate the level of development of each field needed to discover the milestone. A lot of the requirements may seem irrelevent, because they are more or less random.)

Has anyone downloaded the program? If so, what else should it do?

I tryed dl'ing it, but I can't get it to work. What is it supposed to do? All I am told by the Windows Explorer is that it is a "file" - so I don't know what to open it with.

Anyway, we haven't designed a tech model yet. But that propably doesn't mean that the basic framework can not be programmed. The model will also be closely linked with the econ model (or something similar) by recieving some stats from that model, and using them to calculate the advances in technology made that turn. It should propably be more advanced than so, but copying the tech model from Civ2 (the algorithms, I mean) is propably a good start. Then we can build stuff on top of that.

It works when you rename the file from 'tech' to 'tech.exe'.

Well, the program seems to work for me (win2000, athlon 800, 256mb), and the numbers seem to change. I am not sure what the functionality of it is though.

Can you give an explanation of what the program does and which algorithms are used? tnx!,

According to Design Doc 0.3, there are sciences, fields of technology in which they can be applied and milestones which they achieve. The player has control only over which sciences what percent of his research is aimed at.
tech.exe is a simple program that lets you input the percentages. Based on preset probabilities (see earlier post) the development in each science is distributed among the various fields. As the various milestones' requirements are achieved, they are discovered.
As I wrote earlier, the sciences, tech fields and milestones in the program are just meant to show how it works. It would be easier to keep track of things called 'Astronomy', 'Biology' etc. rather than 'Science I', 'Science II' etc.
If at first you succeed, you should be doing something tougher.
