  • Why does Apolyton call us a CIV-CLONE?!??

    I can not believe it!

Here we are trying all we can making sure that our game does NOT end up being yet another regular Civ-clone. And then the one site that we thought we could trust goes up and calls us just that!

You just can't count on anyone anymore.

And as if this wasn't enough, they also got our name wrong! Our game, it seems, is called OpenSourceCiv...

I thought the same. I was disappointed that they couldn't contact us to get some better information about the project. Where could we complain?

I agree that there is no need to complain. As heardie mentioned Apolyton put us on their site, which can only be good.

        I'm just disappointed.

Anyway, I'm going away for vacation the next 2 weeks, so I wont be able to post here in that time. I will "see" you all when I get back!

I had no idea that the wording of my article would be taken so negatively. I certainly didn't mean for it to offend anyone, and if I thought it would have, trust me I would not have used the terminology.

I will be happy to change it to whatever reference you would like, but for the interim anyway I have edited the article and it now reads "Civ-style game".

P.S. As for who to complain to, it is best to direct your comments to the author of the article (which is either Markos or myself most of the time, and in this case, me).

I agree, Dan (Ward). We appreciate all publicity we get. I was just disappointed, that the apolyton people didn't find out more about the project before they wrote. I think it's good manner to find out, is the text you write about someone else at all correct. But don't worry, DanQ. We are not angry. Quite the contrary, we are grateful that we have an opportunity to develop our game in such a marvellously creative environment! Thanks for that. If you please correct the errors in the text, this whole incident can be forgotten.

Here are some things for starters, some of them you already know:
-This is not a clone, but rather a new game inspired mostly by the coming Civilization III, and it will be in the civ-genre.
-The project has started in March 2000 (correct?), so we have hardly begun. We are currently in protoyping phase with programming things, and we are just about to start the detailed gameplay design.
-Project's name is OpenCiv3, but it's not the final name for the game, just a project name.
-The project is completely public, anyone can participate. The game will be open source, and absolutely free.

I think this does it... Thanks for your interest in our project. We are flattered by the publicity we have got on the alt civs page.

One thing to add: in the text you said, that we have a 3d engine constructed. That's not true. First, the engine is not 3d, it's a planar map that looks 3d. Also it's not an engine, but rather a prototype of the technology we are going to use in the map engine.

The article I wrote was based on the information I received from Heardie. There must have been some miscommunication in the information in either how he wrote his letter or how I perceived it -- in fact, it was probably a combination of both.

"This is not a clone, but rather a new game inspired mostly by the coming Civilization III, and it will be in the civ-genre."

                    Already corrected.

"The project has started in March 2000 (correct?), so we have hardly begun. We are currently in protoyping phase with programming things, and we are just about to start the detailed gameplay design."

Never had an exact date, but March was only four months ago... info incorporated into the article now that I have it.

"Project's name is OpenCiv3, but it's not the final name for the game, just a project name."

Reasonably assumed project/game name was one in the same. Clarified in article.

"The project is completely public, anyone can participate. The game will be open source, and absolutely free."

Will let your official website relay this information to the reader...

"... in the text you said, that we have a 3d engine constructed. That's not true. First, the engine is not 3d, it's a planar map that looks 3d. Also it's not an engine, but rather a prototype of the technology we are going to use in the map engine".

The sentence you are referring to I created using information from your official website, but again it seems I misinterpreted it. Reference eliminated.

                    Hope this helps!

Thanks for your concern, DanQ. Heardie, it would be good if you correct the website also, so people don't get wrong impressions. Especially about the map prototype.
