Yes, I definately think we should devise a C&C type thingy for battles. That would solve sooooo many problems and provide an entertaining sideshow for the thing.

My opinion is, that the combat in civ games has to remain strategical - maneuvering large amounts of men in large scale, not bothering about the details of the battle. The combat would look much like in civ2, but of course the underlying combat model would be far more detailed. This is what we should start with. It is entirely possible to make a tactical battle screen later, but in the beginning, it would mean a lot more work; we would need to make another game inside the existing one.
I understand you are eager to see something like that in the game. Sometimes, even I have been toying with an idea of tactical battle. But I have come to a conclusion, that I don't want that much detail in the game. We should start with an advanced combat, with many factors taken into consideration, where the armiesfight tile-by-tile. But as I said, it would be possible to make the tactical combat system in the future. Just let's stick with the essentials for now.

-Good God, NO!!! That bogs a game down so fast, it's not even funny. It would make the AI even bigger, and it takes soo much time. Late in the game when there are already a million units, the last thing you want is some combat.
RTS combat is unciv-like (I suppose that term had to be coined someday).
If the game featured that I probably wouldn't play it.

I agree with Victor, it doesn't solve any problems, but rather adds many more. And after fighting thousands of almost similar battles, you would be totally exhausted. In this kind of game, with such a large scope, tactical battle similar to C&C is definitely out. Some much simpler tactical element could be added in future, but C&C type battle... no.
