  • I am disappointed, to say the least.....

Firaxis has been disappointing me a lot lately.
First of all there was Alpha Centauri-it just wasn't as good as Civilization. What I would really have liked was a Civilization III with better rules and more realism, and perhaps being able to colonize the solar system. Maybe I didn't like it because I couldn't relate to Alpha Centauri. The tech names meant nothing to me.
Then came Antietam. The thing I liked most about Gettysburg was "Fighting the Battle" You would play each of the scenarios, and how well you did on each scenario effected the next one. It seems like Firaxis got too lazy to figure out the effects of the different scenarios and just lumped them into one big one which you cannot keep track of.
And now this. A game which would completely suck as turn based, and probably a Warcraft clone if real time. I can't see much strategy involved either....Dinosaurs also has the problem that noone can relate to it. Just as noone has ever lived on Alpha Centauri, noone has ever been a dinosaur.
The establishment of a Hebrew government and the implementation of its plans - this is the sole way of rescuing our people, salvaging our existence and our honor. We will follow this path, for there is no other. We will fight! Every Jew in our homeland will fight!

I am sceptical too, but I think its too early to make any opinions.

      amazing argument, but true
still there are plenty of SF enthusiasts out there. not sure about dino fans though...

on my big questions is how can you have a civ game with dinosaurs? in civ, you're supposed to be the leader of a tribe. what are you in dino? the leading t-rex?
obviously firaxis has lot of questions to answer...

Why would you imagine this is a Civ game? I.e., because of their marketing tool -- the trilogy thing? I would not expect Sid Meier to go to such trouble just to re-do the Civ genre with Dinosaurs. Had I their ear, I would ask a better question. That is, if I could only think of one.

Btw, not having any real information, it seems like sometimes we project our own ideas of what we think the game will be. Typically, this means imagining it to be something we know, e.g., Warcraft, etc. Then, finding that wanting, we of course become skeptical. Which is fine. But let's disclose what we're being skeptical about -- our own vision. Not what actually is on the drawing board at Firaxis.

well, the thing is that at this point we can only speculate, and criticize each others speculations...

Yeah, I guess Alpha Centauri is a lot more appealing now with the Alien Crossfire addon-I really want to get that.
Hopefully not having the same factions everytime will improve gameplay.
Anyways, the Firaxis guys can't be that much more creative than us -what do you think they game will be like?
I have a hard time visualizing how what you do in dinosaurs will effect what you do in Civ III and Alpha Centauri, let alone how you would progress from one game to another.

Spartan- I can't see why you wouldn't like SMAC for the story. The tech names were for the most part great and very interesting, and you learned a lot of interesting ideas about science if you played the game. The story and setting was great.

If you must pick a flaw with SMAC, it's GOTTA be that the AI was moronic and felt like Civ2 all over again. Which is why I really didn't play it that much.
                  All syllogisms have three parts.
Therefore this is not a syllogism.

I agree with Snowfire. Even playing on Transcend became no challenge to me.

But Sid should wake up to something. Why do people still play CivII even to this day? Scenarios. Scenarios could work for CivIII. Not for Dinos. So it'll be the usual Play it-Like it-Beat it-Master it - Get bored with it routine.

Careful on your statement, BD, i do not play scenarios, nor do they interest me in the least bit. I've tried a few, and found them to be sorely lacking compared to the actual game.

On the dino's game. . im not THAT interested in dinos actually, i was as a kid, but the interest in dinos seems very juvinille to me now. . anyhow, perhaps they can make a good game of it, we'll see. Though im throughly confused as to how it will relate to civIII or SMAC at all. . . this whole sweep of time thing, while its a great idea, doesn't seem to be working out too good at all the way its being done. civIII im looking forward to, but thats it. . .

Female game players would love that because females were the larger gender among T-Rexes.:-)

I say wait and see. After all if Railroad Tycoon had never existed and Sid announced that he was making a "train management game", most people would think he was crazy.

There is no reason why dinos can't make a good game.
