Eh? You mean that 2002 registered posters' votes are worth as much as 2001 registered posters'?
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

If I had been, I would have helped with promoting and explaining what this was about (you posted 3 long posts but didn't bother to explain properly what the HoF is about - most people here and in other on-topic forums have never heard of it before (or of most of the people in it)...)
I second this the last week was for me extremly busy, too. I wasn't able to visit Apolyton in the last two or three days, too. So the poll should at least open for one week and it would be better to have it in the holidays and not before.

By the way poll about the top game series last for more then one month. It ends with this year so if you are of the ones who haven't voted yet: Vote here for CTP1/2.

          It was 4 days.

(you posted 3 long posts but didn't bother to explain properly what the HoF is about - most people here and in other on-topic forums have never heard of it before (or of most of the people in it)...)
What do you want me to say- I introduced it twice ONCE in the 1st post and ONCE in the FAQ.

Eh? You mean that 2002 registered posters' votes are worth as much as 2001 registered posters'?
          Yes. It's either that or keep the 2002 at 1 vote and 2003 have 1 vote ... or give 1999 5 votes... I'd rather not give them 5... or- give 1999 4 votes- 2000 3 votes 2001 3 votes and 2002 2 votes and 2003 1 vote.

          I'm toying with several scenarios...

          -
So the poll should at least open for one week and it would be better to have it in the holidays and not before.
A lot of people go away for the holidays. That's why I did it before.
Also, this forum was amazingly active- the entire 1st page was filled with same day posts- thus, I saw no reason why not to have the election- and this was one of the longest elections ever- 4 days instead of the usual 3.

          LOCUTUS-
If I had been, I would have helped with promoting and explaining what this was about
I was wondering where you were...

That's too less if you are doing it before the holydays. At least double the period so that we have 4 days before the holidays and 4 days in the holidays to vote. At least you have to state in the first post or in the FAQ when the election ends.

Yeah but other people have to do a lot of other stuff before the holidays and have then some time.

Oh yes, and thank you all for voting!

Locutus, I do appreciate your offer to help people understand... but I was reasonably annoyed at people likie child of thor who just complain and don't post any votes.

At least you have to state in the first post or in the FAQ when the election ends.
Yeah, that was an accident. I forgot to do so. In the future, it will be listed in the FAQ. Marione pointed that out in the AC voting thread.

It's usually three days- but I'll make it four days from now on.

As for holidays- I don't know how I'll handle that- but I do want everyone to vote who can.

But luckily for you, the next vote is in december for 2 inductees!

And I';ve sort of been considering MariOnes' suggestion that
              3rd.
wouldn't it be interesting to have SECTIONS in the HoF?
That is, like the big sections you see in the main Forums listing, AC, CIV2, CIVIII, etc.. "sub"-HoFs??? Just a thought. Most of the names I see in the HoF mean nothing to me, and I'm here since spring '99...
But am not certain how to best correctly implement it.

How about this: In December; voting will be 6 days.
              for a future rule?

I can understand that - that's why I felt a longer, more elaborate explanation of what this HoF is about was needed: one that discusses the history, reasons behind it, etc, etc - one that would make sense to newbies and on topicers as well. I think HuangShang summed up nicely how they must feel about this now:
whats this for. i dont know any of these people
As for holidays- I don't know how I'll handle that- but I do want everyone to vote who can.
If you want more people to vote, keeping it open for more than 3 days is *always* a good idea, holidays or no holidays

But luckily for you, the next vote is in december for 2 inductees!
You mean the next vote is 1 year from now?

And I';ve sort of been considering MariOnes' suggestion that
That's essentially what I suggested last time It'll get more people in and more on topicers too. This is getting rather ridiculous: CtP1/2 has until now always been the largest or second largest section of Apolyton, yet of the 42 member of the HoF not a single one has a real CtP background
Of course, as a long-time CtPer and the official CtP representative of the Apolyton Staff (and even the CtPer who's most likely to enter the HoF anytime soon (WTF? Wes, hex, skorp, Harlan or CD should be there, not me...)), I'm not exactly neutral in this case - but that can't be right by anyone's standards...

But am not certain how to best correctly implement it.
If you'd ask me (you probably wouldn't but that won't stop me from posting ), you should elect 1 or 2 member per section per vote. So use the current setup of 1 thread in every (major) section of Apolyton and have each of them elect the most deserving member from their own section - the one or two most popular of these enter the HoF (where you also state in which section they were elected). Pretty much like the Apolytoner of the Season thingie we had a couple of years ago. Of course, proper promotion to get a higher turn-out than this time would be required, but that shouldn't be too hard to do

Hmm.. If I sent you a news item- could you post it? Mark seemed to ignore my last posting PM for this situation.

I'm still not sure about 1 member from each section... What I was thinking was more like this: we force there to be one current/mostly on-topic poster; just to even out the OT's deluging of votes from the past counts that hold over ... Although this brings up the issue of on-topic poster? I consider myself to be on topic- or at least NOT-OT... but what about others... and many other people are ambiguious as well. It's just really hard to force 'sections' on the hall without really messing up the 'free-vote' system. I'll try to work out a way, however... What we really need to do is have You, me, and MariOne discuss this by PM or in a sort of 'discussion' thread for the future of the hall?

                    =
Also, would you care to elaborate more on the hall's purpose? I thought I did well without being too verbose and cant see what else to add without repeating myself?

As for where I'm posting the voting next time:
                    OT (main)
                    Civ III (main)

                    (Satellites)
                    CTP II MP
                    AC-General
                    Alt.Civ section-„³Clash of Civilizations (b/c it has 2nd most posts in alt.civ)
                    Civ III DemoGame

                      Comrade Dan plays CTP?
I saw that one coming... In these forums CD stands for Celestial_Dawn, the godfather of CtP modmaking. No CtPer in his right mind would ever associate the name 'CD' with anyone else but him (Edit: come to think of it, he was actually the winner of the C:CtP Apolytoner of the Season award - he hasn't posted in a while but I think he still carries the official title)

Hmm.. If I sent you a news item- could you post it? Mark seemed to ignore my last posting PM for this situation.
I could only do so for the CtP sections (well, I *can* do it for the other sections but without permission from Dan and/or Markos that would probably cost me my 'job' ). But I'll be happy to have a chat with Markos and Dan about this (they tend to sometimes give suggestions from staff members more attention than suggestions from random forum posters ). A news item, or at least forum announcement, combined with topping your threads would go a long way towards getting the proper amount of attention to this.

Although this brings up the issue of on-topic poster? I consider myself to be on topic- or at least NOT-OT... but what about others... and many other people are ambiguious as well.
Exactly, this would be impossible to do. Even I, though clearly not an OTer, have posted in OTF on occassion, so it would be really hard to draw a line somewhere. That's why I favour the 'Apolytoner of the Season' system: if an OTer gets elected in the Civ2 section, he clearly is both an OTer *and* a Civ2er, that circumvents such problems.

What we really need to do is have You, me, and MariOne discuss this by PM or in a sort of 'discussion' thread for the future of the hall?
The more opinions the better, so IMHO definitely not by PM. If you start a thread in Community and post a link in the SMAC(?) section and here, MariOne and I (and anyone else interested) will find it.

Also, would you care to elaborate more on the hall's purpose? I thought I did well without being too verbose and cant see what else to add without repeating myself?
I'll see if I can write something up, for next time. Basically what you had wasn't too bad, but it was rather burried by the crapload of other info you included in your first 3 posts It needs to be slightly more elaborate and stand out more IMHO...

As for where I'm posting the voting next time:
                      OT (main)
                      Civ III (main)

                      Civ III DemoGame
                      Apolyton Section (???)
With 'CtP II MP', do you mean CtP2-General, CtP1-MP or both?
Aside from that, looks okay to me (I guess I'm not gonna convince you to include Civ2 this time, am I? )

                        DarkCloud,
Well, I wrote a more elaborate and IMNSHO more suitable (i.e. newbie-friendly) introduction for the HoF. Much of it was actually ripped from the existing text because, as I said, it wasn't too bad, just a bit short and not striking enough between the huge amount of other data. It's based on the past edition in this forum, some bits would need to be adapted for future editions and possibly for other forums too. Of course, this is just a suggestion, feel free to ignore/change/add as you desire...

Hello and welcome to another edition of the Apolyton Hall of Fame!

                        What is it?
The Apolyton Hall of Fame (HoF) is a list of people who contributed a lot to the community here on Apolyton. For example: Xin Yu was inducted in the HoF for his incredible strategy and MP contributions to the Civ2 section, yin26 for his fantastic work on 'The List' with suggestions for Civ3. Every member of the Hall of Fame has made great contributions to Apolyton and the Civilization community - these people and their accomplishments must be remembered by us all! If you don't recognize many names you probably haven't been here very long and/or hardly ever post outside this forum - in that case this HoF might be a good opportunity to learn something about them. That is why this Hall of Fame was created: to remember and learn. Periodically, we shall hold a vote for the most popular Apolytoners: the ones who we think contribute the most to Apolyton, the ones who make Apolyton what it is. The winners shall be inducted in the Hall of Fame and their names will live forever in the annals of APOLYTON!

                        History
The idea for the Hall of Fame was born in late 2000. The first edition was held in December of that year and saw Markos and Dan, the owners and administrators of this site, and the first 10 regular posters be inducted. Since then, the HoF vote has been held 4 times a year and between 2 and 6 members have been inducted each time (this number is determined well in advance by DarkCloud, the organizer and administator of the HoF). Up until August 2002, the vote was held only in the Off Topic forum - from that time on it was also posted in other sections (first in Civ3, later also in SMAC, CtP1-MP, CtP2, etc). This is the first time the HoF vote is held in this forum. [DarkCloud: perhaps it might be needed/possible for you to expand on/correct this part? you're the expert after all]

                        This edition
Here is the thread for this year's December edition of the Hall of Fame vote. 3 new members will be inducted this time (there will be 13 new inductees in total in 2002). You have approximately 4 days to vote (until the 18th). Please vote today and elect some of your brethern to join the historic December class; consisting of such hallowed names as Adam Smith, DanQ, MarkG, Giant Squid, St Leo, Ming, Snapcase and more.

So now is your chance to decide: who should be inducted in the HoF this time? CD for this pioneer work in modding CtP1? WesW for his work on both MedMods, Hexagonian for his Cradle accomplishments? Or maybe Asher after all, for all his tech help and Microsoft promotion, or Fez for his amusing rants? It's up to you, now: Remember, your vote counts! [DarkCloud: this part is forum specific, if you can find the time to do this for each forum/find volunteers to do it for you ;-)]

With 'CtP II MP', do you mean CtP2-General, CtP1-MP or both
                          I meant CTP II general.

I could only do so for the CtP sections (well, I *can* do it for the other sections but without permission from Dan and/or Markos that would probably cost me my 'job' http://apolyton.net/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif). But I'll be happy to have a chat with Markos and Dan about this (they tend to sometimes give suggestions from staff members more attention than suggestions from random forum posters http://apolyton.net/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif). Thank you for trying... although topping the threads might be overdoing it

The more opinions the better, so IMHO definitely not by PM. If you start a thread in Community and post a link in the SMAC(?) section and here, MariOne and I (and anyone else interested) will find it.
It would be best to do this in the chatroom; but I'll see about starting a thread in Apolyton section.

Wow. Your intro is quite elaborate; I'll look at it offline and make comments. Thanks

                                POST 1

4th Post down from here contains VOTING RESULTS!

Periodically, we hold a vote for the Apolytoners who we think contribute the most to Apolyton, the ones who make Apolyton what it is. The winners shall be inducted in the Hall of Fame and their names will live forever in the annals of APOLYTON!

                                History
The idea for the Hall of Fame was born in late 2000 as an outgrowth of the old Apolyton Army and Apolytoner of the Season Contests, seeking to honor the people of Apolyton in a more meaningful and structured way. The first edition was held in the Off Topic in December 2000 over a period of 3 days and is currently archived. The first election saw Markos and Dan, the owners and administrators of this site, and the first 10 posters inducted. Since then, the HoF vote has been held roughly 4 times a year with 11-14 total members being elected every year. Up until August 2002, the vote was held only in the Off Topic forum - from that time on it has been posted in other sections (first in Civ3, later also in SMAC, CtP1-MP, CtP2, etc).

Special Thanks/Why we do certain things:
Ming for archiving the first thread and helping manage the thread in its early days.
As per suggestion by MOBIUS, the last vote's are carried onto the next votes.
As per suggestion by Solver, all previous votes are carried onto the next votes.
As per suggestion by Martin Guhman, December votes are extended till 6 days.
As per suggestion by Locutus, introduction revised.

                                This edition
