Space was very interesting (space ladder...) but actually out of the game. I would say that Activision tries to chew more that it could... Maybe CivIII (or CTPIII?) will support space.
I mean, OK space cities sounded a little strange... but what about a couple of MOONS to colonize (for instance supposing them tidally locked to "Earth" so that they are locked in the sky, not moving compared to earth surface) and artificial satellites (as in SMAC) or space bombers and interceptors? Drop pods anyone? Maybe some POLITICAL rules (between civilizations) to regulate space colonization, massive production costs, or popular uprising if you divert resources from happiness to space-whatever, in order to allow more than just one civilization to take the space? (a fascism would have less problems sending stuff upwards than a democracy&c )
Aaaanyway, space was fun but was not (yet) inside the game.
