Wow. "Wreaking havoc on the environment" indeed. I never used (except outside of a game to see what it did), or seen a nuke used. And now I've seen a screen shot, the pollution alone would stop me.

i was using good mod for the apolyton pack and i think that the english nuked the scotts. (i know that they have some)
I did use nukes once in this game and that was once and some 75 turns back. When it all comes to it, life is nothing more than saltfish - Salka Valka

Mine did
When i was playing CTP2 with the blueofrenzy mod and apolyton mods. Ai used nukes 4 times, it depends what civilisations you have mostly,
The ones i got nuked by were:
Japan
Russia
Australia
Me and japan had a full scale nuclear holocaust, all our tiles were dead and everything, then i decided to quit that old game as i was kinda deaded.

This is the first time I hear the AI is building and using nukes, I use them myself from time to time to reduce a potentially annoying neighbour that is declaring war repetitively...
By the time my neighbours develop the advance necessary for the Nukes I have already built the protections though I suppose this is not the case when you play at impossible (I am playing the SAP2 at very hard for the moment).

nukes are actually very useful for example you can anihilate enemy units on land and sea, I've found if you really want a nuke war have either australia or japan i guarantee they will nuke you, on every game i played with them on they used them.
also you get diplomatic reprecussions and pollution expanding which leads to Natural disasters.
On my current game i can't wait to get nukes, the mexicans are attacking me again, india keeps on signing ceasefires then attacking the very next turn. does anyone else have that problem?
Is the eco-terrorist any good?

Chris1 i think its more to do with a civs personality in the text files then anything else, i.e war mongers will use nukes more often than not, its not that some civs use them more than others.
I usualy find when i get nuked off a AI civ (not very often thu) its a civ of aggresive personaity in the text files and civs with trading or scintific personalities dont use them as often if not at all... im not so sure if this is right (i dont know much about mechanisms behind AI Behaviour) but its what i seem to notice in the games i play! Then i remembered thinking to myself "Holy Jesus what are these god damn animals"----> "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"

You're right, Glen. This isn't the way it's written up in the 'personalities' documentation, but I checked out an old post from Azmel2 (Richard Myers) and found:
// This describes the liklihood that the AI will attack. This can
// also be considered the disposition of the personality.
Conquest: Agressive, Neutral, Passive
// This describes how likely the AI will be to violate agreements
// and follow through on threats. It also specifies how the
// regard of an AI will be changed by the dishonest actions of
// others.
Trustworthiness : Chaotic, Neutral, Lawful
// This describes in general terms the methodology used by an AI
// to accomplish its goals and whether or not the AI cares if its
// actions cost the regard of other empires. Evil actions might
// include killing settlers, the use of slavery and the first
// strike launch of nuclear weapons. The regard consequences of
// an evil act will be less for an evil empire than a neutral or
// good one.
Alignment : Evil, Neutral, Good

NOT A GOOD IDEA
NOT A GOOD IDEA, the AI does need to be more aggressive but not, apocalyptic, when i had nuke war with japan it effectively ruined the entire game and i had to start all over again.
I'm still sure some empires are automaticlly more aggressive than others.
i prefer only having 6 civs on maybe 7 but make sure the 7th has a short life span.
The only thing which in my opinion needs more power is the cruise missile, it does not work, what does it actually do? i fired it at a tank and nothing happened?

In Rise of Nations, I think they've replaced the Global Warming catastrophe with an Armageddon event. If too many nukes are fired, Armageddon is declared and everybody loses. What do you guys think of this idea?

So an Aggressive and Evil personality (Stalin or Strangelove) would presumably be most likely to use nukes. This applies to both Russian leaders (male and female) and the female Japanese leader and fits in with what Chris1 posted above. Both Australian leaders are also aggressive, but shouldn't do first strikes.
