  • Questions from the Newbie Gallery

Okay....time to hit the experts up with some more questions....things I've been searching for in the manual (which has proved to be of little use, as was predicted here!), but can't seem to get my arms around:

Trade Routes (clarification): The price that cities will pay for a given good is the amount you make in gold each turn? Is this impacted in any way by prevailing average crime rates in your empire?

Food and Production: I see the numbers, but I'm having a tough time correllating those numbers into tangibles.

Example: I assign a farmer in a city, and my food collected jumps from (makin' these numbers up here) + 35 to + 50. My pop growth goes up from +900 to +1650.....are those values constant, and is there a table someplace that lists them? (ie - essentially I want to find out the marginal cost of adding another farmer specialist).

Same with production.....are there tables anywhere that show unit and building costs?

Are terrain improvements cumulative? IE - if I build a mine, and then build a road thru it, do I get the benefits to food, production, and commerce for both terrain enhancements ? (my gut says I should, but I have not seen the effect).

How do I know the precise % of sum-total food, production, and commerce that's being worked, and is there a way to tell what % I'm actually getting from each tile??

Bizzare questions, I know, but essentially, I'm wondering about such things as: is it useful to build roads in every tile that a city can work? Do terraformed tiles get a greater priority when resource gathering is determined for each city? Stuff like that....

For the cumulative effects of tile improvements: in unmodded CTP2, IIRC roads only effect movement, so there is no real benefit to putting them everywhere ala Civ1,2,3..

As for the other questions, I can't answer them off the top of my head...sorry , but if no one else beats me to it, I'll take a look and get back to you...

Thank ya! I had actually read that thread, but somehow missed that entry! That answers 80%+ of my questions...whooohoooo!

Look at the citisize files and this explanation, that might help:

Don't they display in the Great Library? Or is that only in some mods? In cradle you'll see it there for sure.

Oh, wait. Forgot to mention that: that data is on the fold-out chart. But of course, if you don't have the (paper) manual, you probably don't have the fold-out chart either Gotta hate those special editions... The front of the fold-out chart (the tech tree) can be downloaded from the Directory, but I'm afraid the back of the chart (with the units, wonder, building, etc stats) is not. The only other place to get that info (aside from the strategy guide ) is from the text files themselves (units.txt for units, advance.txt for advances, etc)

Most of the mods have their own charts and posters and stuff of course, so it's not all that big a loss if you play a lot of MedMod or Cradle, but for the original game and Apolyton Pack it's trickier...

Hmm, I probably won't have time for it until the weekend, but maybe I could try to scan the reference chart. It *is* an awfully useful chart and more and more often CtP2 is sold in those cheap editions without the proper paperwork, so more people would probably appreciate it. It will become 9 A4-size scans though (well, if I zoom out a little, I might be able to fit it on 6), not exactly easy to use...

No problem guys! I played to 300BC this morning (got up early to tinker some more), and am totally dominating in all categories, and raking in silly amounts of money via caravans and that TON of trading posts I dropped down....::shakes head:: I like it, but I think it's prolly time to a) apply the patch, and b) raise the difficulty level. My near neighbors are falling all over themselves to stay on my good side, and my economy is growing by leaps.

Ahh, you've already discovered the most serious drawback of CTP2... The wimpy AI. Unfortunately changing the difficulty level doesn't IMHO change the AI all that much in the unmodded game.

Maybe it's time to try the apolyton pack as well...

You foud out the biggest CTP2 problem: The AI.
Now that you know the game it is time to consider getting a mod

Yeah you found the problem, time to get a mod. What about ApolytonPack, Cradle, MedPack, WAW and of course GoodMod.

Maybe my last post in this thread will help to answer some of the remaing 20% I didn't get around to testing specialists yet (as you mentioned above), but it's a good follow up of the 'science & commerce thread'. The specialist testing I'll hopefully get to some other time...
