Simultaneous play?

One of the 1st times I played CTP2 multiplayer, I remember playing simultaneous with the other human players, sort of the same way its handled in Age of Wonders. Since then, I haven't been able to play simultaneous, and multiplayer games are painfully slow. Did I imagine this, or is there actually some way to play multiplayer games simlutaneously??

I used to play m-player quite often (several months ago) but never plain simutaneous. Unless someone has a patch or something i dont think it is possible, but im not positive.
