  • Great Wall useless?

Hi. I'm playing a random map on hard with barbarians set to marauders. The barbarians have destroyed the Zule and Irish within the first 1000 years but they still keep coming even after I build the Great Wall. Does this mean that if a Barbarian captures a city or destroys a civilization, they become "civilized" and are not subject to the "no attacks by barbarians" rule of the Great Wall or is it just useless to begin with?

barbarians won't attack you anymore if you have the great wall

problem is, the great wall usually becomes obsolete before it's even built!

Yeah, Great Wall becomes obsolete very quickly.

The effects would be nice, and I like the reduction of support costs for my army as much as the help against the Barbies. But it does become obsolete very soon after its built.

Maybe one of the mod makers can do something about that.

Otherwise, its still worth the Victory Points for building a Wonder, so its not a complete waste.

I personally think the great wall is useless because of the fact that it becomes obsolete so quickly. Usually it's obsolete 2 or 3 turns after I build it.

The Great Wall is essential for me. I usually have it built early, early in the game - one of my first wonders in mid-Ancient era.

With my modified 75% reduction in military readiness cost, I find it valuable.

I had the great wall and yet the barbarians still ran around destroying my farms and roads. Isnt that considered an attack?

BTW, I made it obsolete with tank warfare.

I don't think the Great Wall works (as far as stopping barbarian attacks). In my first CTPII game I wasn't using slavers (I forgot how to play CTP after playing Alien Crossfire for so long). Anyway barbarians were all over me in that game even while I had the Wonder and I'm sure they were not wandering into my territory, they were being created there. Since then I've been playing with slavers to increase population so I want them to come on in so I can catch them and put them to work.

The Great Library, if I do remember right, says that the Great Wall protects from Barbarians. This could mean that your military units have a better offencive or defencive factor against the Barbarians and not prevent them from attacking you. Not sure though .

If it's any consolation, the Great Wall never worked in real life, either.

Actually, the Great Wall did exactly what it was designed to do. You see, it wasn't designed to keep the barbarians (Mongols) out. It was designed to slow down their retreat so they could be caught and killed. And it worked.

The great wall will prevent any barbarians from attacking any of your units. However the barbarians still can pillage the hell out of you so it is bestto kill them.

You guys seem to be overlooking another important feature of the Great Wall - it's 25% reduction in military readiness cost.

I modified it to 75% reduction in military readiness cost - just like the Sphinx did in CTP I.
