Another vote for Howitzers - especially against a Civ that has railroads, they were pretty much unbeatable.

I do have a fond spot in my heart for Skimship Probe Teams in SMAC, though...

For ancient times the Legionnaire in Civ I though the chariots were fast and sneaky!
Power Power and Power! versus sneaky Pete!

For medieval times the Ship of the Line in CTP I.
Blast them all!

For modern era the Stealth bombers of Civ II.

I loved the muskateer in civ2. I could bust my way up the tech tree to it and be a superpower 2h vs 1h... no contest.
