  • UNOFFICIAL: New building option: City Walls

Though it got a little bit lost in the struggle to attack Innsbruck and Graz, and create defensive forces, we got Stoneworking from ruins.

This... among other things, allows us to build City Walls.

I don't have a defined opinion on the matter, yet... and am just looking for peoples thoughts on the matter.

As per the mod's building.txt, city walls provide us with:

    Code:
       DefendersPercent 15
       PreventConversion 0.5
       PreventSlavery 0.5
'Improving' the defenders is one thing, but the slavery prevention is yet another, to my mind, more important function, for us.

Having said this, city walls cost 450 shields... the same as 3 archers or more than 2 hoplites.

Building city walls will reduce the number of troops we build in that city, but improve their qualitive defense. We can leave proportionally smaller garrisons to defend them, also... leaving more free attackers for further conquest.

We also can, as we have been, shuffle defenders; building city walls doesn't necessarily mean we can't add defenders to that location as well... just that they need to come from elsewhere.

This is a pretty simplistic 'pro and con' argument of building city walls. I just wanted peoples thoughts on this... to get an idea.

One more thought for the day:

Captured cities sometimes have extra production 'left over'. A city walls may be relatively affordable (short production time/ cheap rush cost) in a conquered city, if there is sufficient production left over (provided that there aren't city walls left over from the attack that is.)

more units. At least until we conquer Graz and Wels.

we need to build more units until we can suffiently defend our territory and take graz, but walls would be nice

Units can be defensive and offensive when we want them to be, while city walls can only help defend. On the downside, units take up production %, though i still vote for more units.

Just out of interest, how many times have our cities been attacked anyway?

                None. Yet.

We ain't reloading, however, so a "safety first" policy is a decent idea. Of course, there is nothing wrong with building troops, however.

The city walls must be built when we are no more at war with the Austrians. Now, we need soldiers to reinforce are divisions on the Austrian front. But as soon as a cease fire will be signed, we would be well advised to build city walls to defend our key cities because if you want peace prepare for war.

I'm not quite sure I follow your logic.

We are more likely to be attacked whilst at war.

Yes, war will end... but its not likely to end for some time.

Plus they have a tech advantage... soon, 6H/6A will not be enough in city defence.

(Unless we can take enough/build enough cities to increase commerce enough to catch up in the tech race)

I think Tamerlin mwant we need will only build city walls when we have reached are main attacking goals (I believe Graz, Wels and maybe Lins) and we need to consolidate the defense from this point.

True... but there is a max to 12 defenders, regardless... City walls are how we improve from there... and... what about (enemy) Slavers? One thing you really never expect, until its too late.

city walls are thinking too far, maybe in graz or the city closest to mapfi, but it is not priority at all

We don't have to bother now about the stacks of 12 units that will defend our cities in the future. We must produce military units to end the Austro-Lemurian war as soon as we reach our objective which I believe is not to destroy the Austrian people but to expand the frontiers of our nations to the detriment of one of our neighbour. When a peace is settled we will have the time to build the City Walls that will strengthen our defences and help us hold our gains.

That was the most relavant and understandable post ive ever seen from huangshang.

Its a shame city walls take so long to build, but i agree theyre just not a priority ever because theyre more preventative, and we dont react to that until it happens or unless youve run out of other good buildings to build.
