    In my last game my civ was curved around a very large lake which was only one square wide in a few places. The thought immediately occurred how nice it would be if I could build a bridge across these narrow channels.

    One obvious way is to create a ship unit with no movement capability and an appropriate graphic. This would then be 'created' in the required spot. (How??)

    The nice thing about this is that an enemy naval unit could blow up the bridge.

    The bad thing is that no roads or railroads can be built across the narrows.

    Anyone got any bright ideas about how this might be implemented?

    In the late game you can build undersea tunnels and for the early game I use a transport ship to cover this gap, of course it costs more movement points than a real bridge but for me it is ok.

      Could be possible to make it so you could make a bridge by re making the road tile imp so it can only go on water but it would have to cost the earth to make to stop people making to many and then only on shallow water

        Or a code (if possible) to be impossible to build another bridge in one of the neghbor tiles. this way it will be a one square bridge imps

            It should be easy to implement.

            Make roads buildable only on Beach tiles via the Road improvement - thereby making it possible to link those one or two-gap ocean straits.

            Just give it the cost of 3000-4000 PW to do so.

              I suppose you'll want a bridge tile improvement graphic then

                  The TERRAIN_SPECIAL1 is listed in gl_str.txt as "Bridge" - presumably Activision had this idea too. IIRC, there are some appropriate pictures in the tile files...

                    There are, but they are terrain TileIndices, I don't know if they'll work as timps. Try it sure. Oh, and it only works when there is a dersert tile to the south west.

                        May have to make one could be difficult as the one in the samurai scenario is only half of the bridges we need

                          Allowing roads to be built on beach tiles works just fine. Minor adjustment in the files required. This opens up the prospect of ground units fighting naval units! Haven't tried this yet but could have interesting consequences (i.e. a CTD).

                            seen it done it.

                            To be honest I got a battle going on in a deep sea tunnel it was fun land units fighting battleships

                            but it should have beach battle screen if not a simple mod is in order.
