  • Naming terrain features

Here's another challenge for the SLIC-enabled:

Is there a way to allow for naming of terrain features with labels that will appear on the map (like in SMAC)? It would help you find your way around a big map, and also add a lot of story-like depth (suddenly, you're little ambush in the wilderness becomes the Battle of Mt. Bingo...)

Also, historically, explorers used naming as a way of staking claim...

Besides from getting the place names to appear on the map, I don't think there is any way to allow the player to input data once they are in the game, it would have to be a slic or text file that had all the place names put in beforehand.

I think there may be two ways of doing the actual names. One is to have a messagebox that pops up everytime you walk over a certain tile, giving the place name, and the first civ to be there, but this could get a bit crowded and messy.

The second is taking Pedrunn's colony add-on a little further, and making a type of city that is completely invisible. Its name will be of where you are, and it will not be able to do anything but sit there (I don't know how this will affect the national manager, I guess you'll get loads of extra cities doing nothing) Then I suppose you could have an ability to found these invisible 'cities' on some/all early/late? explorer units. This has the additional merit of being possible to see who named the place, and who controls the place.
I dunno how possible this one is though.
    Concrete, Abstract, or Squoingy?
