  • Revised Info_str

The following is a list of suggested text changes made to the info_str.txt file. These changes are intended to improve the atmosphere of the game, as I have found some of the original messages to be pretty annoying.

My main gripe has been the pathetic notifications the Activision file offers for when wonders are started, abandoned or built, but I have taken the opportunity to fiddle with some other messages as well.

I have used the info_str.txt file from Dale's excellent Apolyton Pack as the basis for this list, so you will find in this list suggested messages for entering each of the ten ages.

Anyone who wants to use any of these is welcome - all you have to do is make a copy of your original info_str.txt and rename it as something else, then paste the new lines of text you want to use from the file below over the originals in your info_str file.

Some examples from the attached file are given below:

WONDER_STARTED "Travellers to our cities bring word that {player[0].leader_name} has vowed to demonstrate the power and might of the {player[0].civ_name_singular} civilisation. It seems that the {player[0].civ_name_singular} people have begun work on an inspirational but mysterious project. They call it {wonder[0].name#ARTICLE} '{wonder[0].name}'."
WONDER_STOPPED "Travellers to our cities bring amusing tales of how a clearly embarrassed {player[0].leader_name} has been forced to abandon all work on {wonder[0].name#ARTICLE} {wonder[0].name} project. Minor {player[0].civ_name_singular} functionaries have explained that their leader had better things to do with the resources, and could not justify the enormous costs involved."
WONDER_ALMOST_FINISHED "Travellers to our cities bring the latest news of the amazing {player[0].civ_name_singular} project. It seems {player[0].leader_name} has almost completed {wonder[0].name#ARTICLE} {wonder[0].name}."
WONDER_COMPLETE_OWNER "Our empire's greatness manifests itself in the work of our people! At a spectacular ceremony, the authorities in {city[0].name} have announced the completion of {wonder[0].name#ARTICLE} {wonder[0].name}! News of this incredible achievement will swiftly reach the very ends of the earth."
WONDER_COMPLETE_ALL "Travellers to our cities are in awe of the newly finished {player[0].civ_name_singular} {wonder[0].name}. Tales spread throughout our empire of the greatness of the {player[0].civ_name_plural} and their visionary leader, {player[0].leader_name}."

DISCOVERED_REMNANTS_OF_ANCIENT_CIV "We have found the last remnants of an advanced culture. Among the decaying ruins, our explorers manage to gather clues to some of the knowledge these ancients once possessed. We now understand the secrets of the lost art of {advance[0].name}."
DISCOVERED_ANCIENT_TREASURE "Our explorers search among the ruins of a long dead civilisation and locate a hidden chamber. Precious gems and fabulous items of jewellery are recovered. {gold[0].value} gold, the combined value of the finds, is added to the treasury coffers."
BESET_BY_VANDALS "Our explorers search among the ruins of a long dead civilisation and are ambushed by lurking barbarian tribesmen. Prepare for battle."
BESET_BY_NOTHING "Our explorers search among the ruins of a long dead civilisation and locate absolutely nothing of interest whatsoever. These were truly a boring people."

IA_MAX_CITIES_REACHED "Our empire's great size is testing the limits of our administrative capabilities. Further expansion will surely damage our ability to provide the direction we need, and will cause distress to our people. Perhaps we should review our forms of government?"
PLAYER_DEFEATED "The memory of {player[0].country_name} has been consigned to the history books. Now that there are no longer any free {player[0].civ_name_singular} cities anywhere in the world, the {player[0].civ_name_singular} government collapses utterly."
PLAYER_DEFEATED_BY "The world trembles! By force of arms, the {player[1].civ_name_plural} have conquered {player[0].country_name}."

AGE_ONE_ENTERED "Our empire has emerged from the barbarism of prehistory. We have entered the Ancient Age."
AGE_TWO_ENTERED "Our empire is becoming more prosperous and the people are learning that there is more to life than just struggling to survive. As our culture develops, we enter the Classical Age."
AGE_THREE_ENTERED "Our empire, built on the firm foundations laid by our ancestors, has surpassed even the dreams of our greatest early sages, and is still growing: we have entered the Medieval Age."
AGE_FOUR_ENTERED "Our empire is flourishing culturally and scientifically. We have entered the Renaissance Age."
AGE_FIVE_ENTERED "Our empire is advancing and our rising living standards are creating demand for more products and more efficient means of production. We have entered the Industrial Age."
AGE_SIX_ENTERED "Our people have developed a solid understanding of the world around us. As our knowledge grows and our capabilities increase, we begin to master nature. We have entered the Modern Age."
AGE_SEVEN_ENTERED "Our people are so creative and have learned so much that no library can contain our magnificent works. To cope with our mighty culture, the power of electronics is harnessed: We have entered the Computer Era. "
AGE_EIGHT_ENTERED "Our people stand at the threshold of a bold new epoch in scientific understanding, as the very mysteries of life itself begin to unfold before us: We have entered the Genetic Age."
AGE_NINE_ENTERED "Our people are testing the limits of knowledge itself, as we fast approach the zenith of human achievement. We have entered the Diamond Age."
AGE_TEN_ENTERED "Our people have written the final chapters of the Book of Knowledge. We have nothing left to learn, as we have discovered all that there is to learn. We have entered the Ultimate Age."
