  • Little help?

I know that I've cross posted this to the Help forum, and I understand that I can be banned for this (according to the Civ Forum FAQ 2.1). But, I want to play this game darn it! and it seems no one looks at the other forum.

And I guess it can be related to Multiplayer, since if I get the game working I be able to play MP

    So here is my problem:
I recently purchased CTP, and installed it using the full install option.

    I then applied the 1.2 patch, 1.21 hack and a 1.21 no-CD crack.

However, when I attempt to run the game my computer locks up hard, requiring a full reboot, control alt delete does nothing.

Let me clarify, I run the Call to Power icon thing from the Start Menu, and click Play.

The Activision promo video plays fine, and so does the CTP intro. When the main menu and cursor appear, the game locks up. The cursor freezes. The screen does not change though. (Before I applied the no-CD patch the CD music did play, but it still locked up)

    My system specs are:
    Pentium II 400
    128 Megs of RAM
ATi All in Wonder Rage 128 16megs
    C-media Sound card
    Windows 98
    DirectX 7.0a

Using the most current drivers for all my hardware, no programs running in the background, nor any loaded software (everything removed through msconfig except systray and explorer).

I appreciate any help. I'm a long time (and current) Civ 2 player, and really want to try the "upgrade" of it.

    Thanks.

    Hello,

I'm no expert. My only advice is to isolate the problem (which you might have already done).

Completely uninstall all of the CTP folders.

Then install just the raw Call to Power CD without the patches. And launch it. If it works fine, it's probably one of the patches. If it doesn't work, then it might be the CD or your computer -- try installing the CD on another computer (if you can). If it runs fine on the other computer, then it is your first computer that is the problem (enough memory?).

If you narrow it down to one of the patches, install the patches one at a time and try launching it after each install. Once it fails, you found the problem.

    Hope this helps some.

    Regards.

Quinns has right - everytime you add a patch, launch the game, play a few turns, save the game. Restart CTP and open the saved game. This is the best way to find out, whether there is something wrong with the file(s) you downloaded or the PC.

I would say all - ok most - pathces on the Apolyton has been tested and crosstested by many. But something can mess up during download. I have heard/read about that many times.

        quinns and TheBirdMan,
        I have tried that.
I installed it (full install) clean 1.0, and launched it, got as far as the Main Menu, with CD music playing, and it locked.

I then tried 1.2 clean, and it locked at the same place.

I then suspected the Redbook audio of causing my lockups (hey, I was desperate ) so I installed the No-CD patch from http://www.megagames.com and low and behold, it locked at the exact same place, the main menu (sans CD music).

Unfortunately I can't even move the cursor to select a new game from the main menu to try this Right when the Main Menu shows after the loading screen it locks up.

        Quinns;
I do have another computer I could test it on (well, I have a 486/66 with 20 megs of Ram.. but I won't even try..) Its a P-150 laptop, but it only has 16 megs of ram, and I doubt it would even install.

I do have over 500 megs free on the drive I installed CTP on, and I have a seperate 256meg windows swap file.
When I fresh boot I have 97% resources free of my 128 megs of Ram.

Thanks quinns and TheBirdMan for your replies.

Well I'll be a son of a ... I guess UBB code is disabled. :|
        Lets try this again

          Then it's probably the pc.

Try if you can get another display adapter(!) and of course the newest drivers for the card and the display.

I have worked with this stuff for more than 11 years now - and I are nearly sure I'm guessing right. If it was memory, you would also have trouble in other games/applikations. But if it is the display adapter, it could easily effect only one applikation.
