Hi there, incase any body is interested I have found out how to play CTP via
a serial cable over a direct cable connection. First of all make sure that
Direct Cable Connection is installed on both of the computers. Once this is
done go to the Control Panel and double-click network. On this screen click
the Add button, then Select Protocol and click Add. You will now get the
select Network Protocol window, so select Microsoft under the Manufactures
box, and IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol under the Network Protocols Box. Now
click OK, and it should install the protocol, followed by a message to
restart your computer which you should do. Right, now repeat the
aforementioned process for the other computer you will be using. Once this
is done start up direct-cable connection. You will need to set one of the
computers as a host and one as a guest. I don't know if it makes any
difference but I chose to make the host the faster of the computers and the
one which would create the game. Once your computers have connected start up
CTP. ( Note the connection may take some time and you may get a window come
up which asks for the name of the host computer, just click ok and leave it
blank.) Once CTP starts choose multiplayer, and you want to use the second
option of IPX connection. Start up Ctp on your second machine and join the
game created on the host and you should be away!!
Hope this helps. For reference the two systems I was using were identical:-
AMD K-2 350, 64MB memory.
Good luck
