  • Problems in setting up a LAN game

No, sorry to disappoint you, I'm not actually playing CtP1-MP myself - I wish I had the time!

However, I did receive an email with a question from someone who's having problems setting up LAN games.

This person is trying to set up a LAN game on a TCP/IP network (he later tried IPX as well, but nogo on that either), and after following the instructions in the manual, the 'Launch' button is still disabled. He tried it on 5 different PCs with 3 different OSs (Win2Kpro, WinXP, Win98) and all with the same NIC (Ethernet CAT-5).

Here's the relevant part of my reply, do you guys have any further advise/wisdom to share?

[...] To answer your question, can you see other human players when you've created the LAN game? My guess is no, but correct me if I'm wrong. If I'm right, can you see them in the lobby? If you can't get other human players to join your LAN game and you don't see them in the lobby either, the most logical explanation would probably be that there is something wrong with your network settings. Does playing multi-player give you problems for other games as well or is it just C:CtP which is affected?

If you want to play LAN games on your own, this is possible but you should make sure 'Dynamic Join' is enabled in the 'Rules' settings and also, you should have at least 1 AI player in your game. Even if you want to play with several human players this might be a good test: try to set up an MP game on your own and then, once the game is running, let the other player(s) join the LAN lobby and see if they can see your game-in-process and if they can join it. This might at least help in pinpointing the source of the problem. [...]

Are all those PCs at his home and using Internet Connection Sharing? I mean, the goddarn Network Address Translation might be taking place.

Now, Locutus, you'll not get out of here before you play CtP-MP .

Locutus, would you mind re-post your question to the Help Desk thread?

It is important that we keep all questions regarding multiplayer into a single thread for easy tracking

I never understood why, but fine by me. Stick a fork in this thread, it's done!
