          Rating System

I was looking today The Rank List for PBEM and found a bit confusing the coexistence of many lines like these:

          Rank___Name____Points___W___L
          ________________________________
          4 _____Don ____ 26 ____ 3 ___0
          8 _____Klair_____ 25.4___48___0
          ________________________________

This raises many questions about the formula used for calculating the results. Obviously there is very important criteria not listed here, that is influencing the Rank much more then the numbers of (W) and (L).
I am not familiar at all with the existing score system and I play mainly for pleasure, but just out of curiosity, is there anybody who could explain that to me?
This is not a criticism, just a question.

Every rated turn 10% of the score is taken for each player rated, and added to a pot...... The Pot is then divided accorded to position - for instance in a 4 player game 46% goes to first, 29% to second, 17% to third and 8% to fourth... IF your finishing score is higher than your starting score this is considered a win - so the W is increased by one... and obviously the contrary too.

Criticism, such as yours C-Matrix is welcomed, the rating system is far from ideal, and the score dictates place, not the wins or losses... they only indicate whether the score went up or down.... not by how much - so a win could suggest the score went up by 2 points, and a loss could represent a .001 loss.
              He's back after a fashion...

This link doesn't work. It asks me to log in?? It's the one in the original post of this thread, and I assume it has an explanation of the scoring system?

It does not work for me either..... the orifinal scoring system was replaced in September for two reasons.... I took over the rankings, and could make neither head nor tail of the existing system, secondly it did not seem to be competitive and so I deemed the system I use to be fairer.... the stake of 10 % and then the reallocation of the pot according to position, HOWEVER it is far from ideal, and I would LOVE to see a definitive system introduced.. The present system rewards higher ranked players less for victories against lower ranked players and vica versa... the % reallocation based on 10% stake is:

                  PLAYERS
                  2..1ST..67%..2nd..33%
                  3..1ST..54%..2nd..31%..3rd.. 5%
                  4..1ST..46%..2nd..29%..3rd..17%..4th..8%
                  5..1ST..41%..2nd..27%..3rd..17%..4th..10%..5th..5%
                  6..1ST..36%..2nd..25%..3rd..17%..4th..11%..5th..7% ..6th..4%
                  7..1ST..33%..2nd..23%..3rd..16%..4th..12%..5th..8% ..6th..5%..7th..3%
                  8..1ST..30%..2nd..22%..3rd..16%..4th..12%..5th..8% ..6th..6%..7th..4%..8th..2%

What exactly is the 10% stake? 10% of what?

                      Oops sorry!

All Players start with 21.00 points, and 0 wins, 0 losses, every time a result of rated players comes to me, 10% of everyones score in the game is taken off, and added to a pot... so two players on 21.00 points each stake 2.1 points... so each player now has 18.9 points, but the Pot contains 4.2 points ... from the chart I can see that Player one gets 67% of the pot or:

                      4.2 * 67%, which is 2.814 points.

Player two gets 33% of the pot or

                      4.2 * 33% which is 1.386 points.

                      SO the result would be:

Player 1: 18.9 + 2.814 points or 21.714 and a 'win' as their score increased

Player 2: 18.9+1.386 points or 20.286 and a 'loss' as their score decreased.

Next time there is a rated result involving the players... player one stakes 10% of his higher score, and player two stakes 10% of his lower score.
                      He's back after a fashion...

Aha! All is now clear, thankyou. Seems like a reasonable system to me. Actually, seems like a damned fine system

Gav, how do you decide which game to include in the competition?
Are they some procedures, like preliminary registering of the game you play?

There must be three or more players in the game, two or more of which wish to be rated, then the moderator of the game posts the results on this forum every x9 turn, according to powergraph order... first rated turn is 19.

Internet Games are done differently, this applies only to PBEM

Is that means that a game with 2 Human and 1 or 2 AI can also be ranked? How do you get a moderator? Do you have to get it from T1 of the game or he can start from some later turn?

And why every 9 turn the results are revised? I thought that the game is ranked only once when is finished? Do you add some extra points for number of cities or population and so on?
