Received back from Jon Miller.

Yeah, sorry, I don't check that email daily actually. I should, now that I got my new laptop. We are a bit slow (apparently) is sending off the email/PM to you all. Donegal was elected as Voice to the Stormians (somewhat because he is the 3rd most active Voxian right now).

I have seen a copy of what he wants to send you, I assume he will shortly.

I suggest we send a message back making nice noises about chatting.

I suggest we also let them know that we assume that units adjacent to our border are hostile (including scouts).

Interesting. So I presume in MP it is fairly common for teams to declare war as soon as they meet? [Obviously this doesn't happen in single player, which is all I play...]

Seems very antagonistic to me to declare war straight out. But I guess, even if we do intend to attack them in the near future, we should make nice noises first. That way it doesn't tip them off about our true intentions, making it easier for us to stab them in the back later...

I think the "units adjacent to borders=hostile" thing is good to say - just to get a bit more buffer.

Actually it is very uncommon to delcare war right away, assuming that respect is shown, like keeping units off cultural borders.

Vox know that, and they kept the scout out of our sight on the of chance we didn't discover the contact by checking F4 and demographics.

Almost like they were trying to piss us off by treating us like idiots.

However, past DGs have not had religion. If war keeps religion out, expect a lot more war, even if it is cool.

I think that declaring war right away and convincing Vox that it's just because of their Religion and "nothing personal" will be a major diplomatic feat.

Remember in the PTWDG when we refused to unblock the chokepoint between us and them, and tried to convince them that this was not an aggressive thing to do, just business as usual, defending our lands, etc.? Boy did that not go over as we expected!

If declare war we had better follow through because our diplomatic relations with Vox will be shot.

Greetings to Donegal and the Voice.

We find ourselves in a sticky situation, and we wish to discuss the problems with the Voice.

First, as you may expect, GS is uneasy with scouts probing our lands by jumping up on hills on our cultural border, or any tile on that border as a matter of fact. We hope that the Voice can understand custom and accept our request to stay away from our cultural border.

Secondly, we congratulate you on your discovery of Hinduism. We are sure it is an exciting belief. However...

We do not wish to share that belief at this time. How could we resist, you might ask? Well, our wise men tell us that there is a way to prevent itinerant preachers from spreading the Hindu gospel. It is not an easy way, and it is a way fraught with possible misunderstanding. That is why we wish to discuss the situation with you.

What is very likely to happen, it is being discussed among Stomians as I write this, is that we will trigger the in game mechanic of War. Our wise men tell us that the physics of this universe will prevent your preachers from spreading the word if this in game state of war exists.

In game state of war... that is all it need be. The Storm have no intention of attacking the Voice, or any of the servants or units of the Voice. We simply wish to be xenophobic, if you can understand that desire.

We welcome further discussion with Donegal, Jon Miller, or McMeadows on behalf of the Voice.

We also wish to make ourselves clear.

We may use in game war to prevent the spread of Hinduism. We request that Vox units stay away from our cultural borders.

Everything else is open to discussion, and we consider ourselves at peace in that we will not attack Vox units outside of our territory during this period of 'war' unless the Voice demonstrates to us that real peace is not possible.

In the last game. We ended peace when we tried to reneg on agreements to share techs. We liked it when we were getting the tech from Beta's shrewd trading. Then we resented it when we had all they could give and would have had to share our own research.

That is what sent us to war with Vox.

We tried to play them as AI.

Anything can be done diplomatically in these games. Old enemies can become new friends. Old friends can become enemies. It is a matter of interests.

The key is the discussion. Make your rivals know why you are doing what you are doing if you want them to agree and go along.

We have good reasons for going to war in game. There is no difference between war and peace as far as units are concerned. Any time two units are adjacent, all that stops an attack is the need to declare war to attack.

As I said on the 'War/Religion' thread, I don't see how we can announce a faux war (nothing personal chaps) then attack their scout, should the possibility arise. It's one or the other, IMV.

Of course, if the trap is sprung, and they ended their scout's move next to Grog, we would have some leverage.
