  • Minor Crisis: WE NEED A NEW GRAND POOBAH!

Dom's reply to a PM I sent him (alerting him that the game was about to start):

Due to recent changes in my RL, I'm sad to say that I cannot devote any time to Civ anymore (at least for the foreseeable future). This is difficult for me, as you can imagine, but it's the right decision.

Naturally, I feel very bad about taking on such a big commitment with the C4DG then not even showing up on the first day, so to speak. Please accept my apologies and extend them to the rest of the team.

Enjoy the game, and long live Stormia!
Houston, we have a problem. Is anyone willing and able to step up and be the turnplayer?

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

    ****.

Sorry, but while I would love to step up, I don't have the time. Exams and running the ISDG takes alot of time.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

I'm not up for it either. It's a mixture of cannot and willnot for me. Being an active strategizer/organizer is my limit.

I fear we've got a serious problem on our hands.

I'm sorry to see Dom go... Dom, when you see this: I hope everything is alright, and it's just a busy time, and not a stressing time for you.

As for stepping up: no way I'm going to do it, the past few weeks are just a slight example of what the coming months are going to be. Work will be killing me, it will be a burden just to read everything posted here. There is no realistic way I can spend the time needed to be turnplayer. I hope someone else is up for the job...

I'll play what turns I can, and give prompt notice when I can't. With my legal writing course about to kick into high gear with a 30-page appellate brief, that probably translates into a fill-in role for me, but in the absence of someone else stepping up, I'll make time to get the turns played.

I've made a daily rutine to spend at least an hour or two a day on CIV, and lately I've prioritized this demogame (since MP lasts more than an hour anyways).
I have no previous experience, but I'm willing to do the job and be constantly present. So let me know if you need me.

You know, I went through some trouble a few weeks ago.
I was playing MP 4-8 hours a day right after I got from work, and it really took a toll on my marriage (and it was only after a couple of months). I've got two kids (2.5 and 0.75 years old) and I was missing a lot of their growing up.
I had to take three weeks off (vacations down here in Chile) 'cause I had no computer at the beach...it was like getting off a drug.
Still, the little time my family and I are willing to let me dedicate to CIV (via this type of gaming, which btw I find fascinating because we get to communicate with a lot of people, and not necesarily only about the game) is very therapeutical (hope I spelled it right) for me.
              My point?
Well, I don't know what Dom's rl issues may be, but I can relate...and hopefully give some support. RL can be a selfish b1tch sometimes (and then you marry one ) Well, I guess we can all relate.

Well then, let's get it on!

As mentioned previously, I'm willing to be a turn player, but I'd like to follow someone else's example of how GS plays and records turns, so I'd rather not go first.

Hmm. How about we post an example from the PTWDG GS forum for you?

I only say this b/c only you and Solomwi have expressed willingness to play turns.

                    EXAMPLE:

                    TURN 27:
Plan for the turn (edited to the newest):

                    Movement:
                    - Grog: If both warriors remain on the isthmus (most likely), Grog remains fortified. If one of them moves 6, Grog moves 2 at the other hill. In the unlikely event, that the isthmus will be free, Grog moves at it.
                    - Slash moves 8 in all cases.
                    - Hack moves S of Tim, most likely 3.
                    - Ouch moves S of Willy, even if that means to free the mountain for him.
                    - Crush (see below) moves 8, but we won't let him go very far.

                    Production:
EotS switches from Pyramids to Granary, which is ready next turn. Hurricane finishes Warrior ("Crush") and starts another one. No change in laborers.

                    Science:
Pottery is ready. Setting research to Bronze Working, but sliders back to 10.0.0 (no science, no luxury) for 1 turn.

                    Worker:
Finishes road at the floodplain. Moves 7.

                    Diplomacy:
We offer the team of VC The Wheel.
                    Then three pages of discussion

                    Then:

Rodney tried to slip through (6). Grog goes back (2) therefor. Slash moves 8. The defense line will be up next turn. Tim went 3 and so did Hack, his shadow. Willy went 2, Ouch 1 and is now south of him too. Hurricane builds Crush, who moves 8.

Pottery researched. BW could be ready in 6 turns at 90% (11 beakers/turn, making +1, playing the sliders shows, the cost is maximal 64 beakers). Setting the sliders at 10.0.0, next turn gives us 10+12=22 gold. We are rich, rich, rich, Sire! VC doesn't have Pottery. Offering The Wheel to VC. Switching EotS to Granary (1 turn). Leaving Hurricane at Warrior. Laborer switched to unshielded grassland for 1 turn.
We generally posted a turn thread in advance of the turn, with whatever plan we had going in. We then discussed/tweaked the plan. Then the save actually arrived and the turnplayer (and/or others who were around at the time) played the turn and posted the moves.

The above is fairly Spartan, because it was early and b/c the turnplayer isn't a verbose sort (Sir Ralph ). One could include more information (demographics info) and of course screenshots.

That looks easy enough, but as you say, early turns don't have too much to them. Also, civ4 has slightly different information available.

                      Screenshots required and details?

                      -Immediate area of cities/units
                      (zoom?, grid?, resources?)

                      -Top Cities/Wonders

                      -Demographics?
                      (each or particular ones)

                      -Advisor screens?

People like E_T and roadcage wanted a vast array of information in RP - so we better make up a wishlist of information/screenshots.

A little later I'll dig up an old RP turn post for comparison and ideas of other information to include.

Arrain, it is a good thing you did not point him to the turn threads that had run over 500 post and needed multiple threads.

Some heroic posting by DeepO in those turns.

Yeah...the record is 950 posts in a single turn thread (well, in two threads, but you get the idea). And most of them were useful, and a fair few puched the charactor limit on individual posts...

Heh, well, yeah. The Lego war threads, for instance

No need to scare him off!

                            dejon,

Screenshots of the empire (for a while, we will likely get the whole thing in one shot), and of the demographics screen. Maybe the Power Graph too.

The detailed analysis of statistics, however, can be done by someone who replays the turn based upon your recording of the moves, and then gets into the numbers. You don't have to post screenshots of every little detail.
