Okay, I'll bring it up again if there are no IND teams.

Or if we have access to stone, dejon. It's certainly worth a serious discussion if we have stone, even if we're not IND. *I* might still be against, but I'm occasionally wrong

Ok, any thoughts on who should be our SecDef (Minister of Defense, for you Euros)? Given that I agree with DeepO that the position should emphasize organizing the Scholia's decisions and communicating them to the turnplayer (instead of turn-by-turn MMing of military moves), I would be willing to do the job, if the team approves. I certainly spend enough time on this forum!!

You've got my vote, Arrian!
Let's see...
president..... check
turnplayer.... check
min of def..... check.
So all we need is a diplo nazi, and possibly an intelligence guy. I might try the intelligence thing myself, so who wants to be our diplomatic leader?

You'd be great at intel, DeepO.
Diplo... hey, this is GS! Let's just ignore the other teams
I'm looking at some of our newer members for SecState...

Has anyone really messed around with prebuilding units, switching to something else, and coming back? I know that Firaxis added decay of builds put aside in order to counter the possible exploit of pre-building a massive army that could appear as if by magic in 1 turn (w/o costing you any upkeep until then). But I don't know how the decay works, exactly.

On prebuilding, I've used it a bit in my current Mansa Musa game and not noticed any decay at all. I haven't been storing builds for extended periods, though. An example would be working on barracks in the ultra-early "downtime" when I had plenty of workers/settlers/warriors either deployed or under construction and no other build choices. Then finish, say, Pottery, switch the city to a granary, and go back to a barracks when that's done.
Edit: Just saw DeepO's post on prebuilds. Mirrors what I did, but much better stated.Last edited by Solomwi; January 17, 2006, 17:39.Solomwi is very wise. - Imran Siddiqui

I've noticed something a bit weird in SP... sometimes I don;t seem to get the XP benefit of switching to the relevant civics. I was thinking maybe it was from pre-builds started *before* those civics were in effect? Anybody? The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.

Haven't seen something like this, T. Anything specific to it? I thought it was just when finishing the unit that the civic counts, but I've yet to try stacking units (e.g. have an archer, horse and axe prebuild, switch civics, finish 3 units, go back for 30 turns.). There might be some rule against exploits there... but it doesn't seem to bothr me when playing a SPI leader

Nope, that wasn't it... I'll try to find or recreate the problem. The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.

In the meantime, I was messing around with an early start as Saladin, and got whacked by a neighboring AI civ.
So that brings to mind what is perhaps the first military question: How quickly can we field units better than Warriors? The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.

I took Saladin out for a spin recently and didn't fair particularly well either.
To answer your question, that depends on civ choice. If we're the Mail, we would need to research 2 techs (hunting, archery) for our archer-variant UU, or 1 tech (BW) and hope we have copper for axes, or 2 techs (hunting/argriculture, animal husbandry) and hope we have horses for chariots.
Clearly, the archery route is the safe bet.
If we're not the Mali, it could be different (if we start with hunting, archery is 1 tech away).
