  • Membership for Enigma_Nova

quoted from an old, old thread:
Returning to the issue of veto, I propose that any new member must pass a poll, with a twist. Some groups use an interesting approach known as the black ball. In these groups when a membership issue is voted on it is done so with a box containing marbles. There are many white balls and a few black. Each member in turn reaches into the box and deposits a ball into a third compartment. When each has done so, the contents of the third compartment are examined by all. If the deposited balls are all white, the applicant is accepted. If there is a single black ball, he or she is rejected.

That sort of system works with a small number of people. It ensures that no one is forced to coexist with someone completely anathema to them. It does require that people be reasonable and not petty with their choices.

If we do this, then we would post a poll with White, Black, Abstain as the only options. A single Black vote would deny the application. Abstain would have no effect. People granted admission would see the forum and see the number of voters. People denied would never see it.

    Here's how it goes.

Vote White for yes, let him in.
Vote Black for no, I have very strong reasons for not wanting this person on the team.
Vote Abstain if you do not care either way.

If after 96 hours (usually 48, but longer since it is a new forum) there are no votes for Black, and assuming that a reasonable number of people vote White or Abstain, then Enigma_Nova will be granted entrance to the team. A single Black vote would deny entry.

    Black

    The poll is expired.

There is an issue with regard to E_N that people should know. He was accused of cheating in SMAC PBEMs and demo games.

When asked by PM for his side of the story he said something to the effect that it is impossible to cheat in Civ4.

I thought about not bothering to post the poll, but I wanted the rest of the team to have an opportunity to have your say.

Well, if you want to play it that way...

Certain members of BOH cheated in C3CDG, and they are still playing in this DG. Everyones slate has been wiped clean.

However, it would be...prudent if all communicatin about Enigma could be posted in this thread...so we all have access to the infomation.

I can't post PMs without permission of the people involved.

E_N's response to me when I asked him for his side of the story was one line that amounted to 'you can't cheat in Civ4'.

If the Horde wish to continue with James as a member, that is their call.

Well, that does not bode well for him, then, does it?

Yeah, I know, that is simply a comparisson. The "taint" can be removed...so if Enigma showed remorse, it would help his case.

That is from July 8, 2004, a year and a half ago.

And I'm quite sure you can cheat in Civ4, though I haven't done anything other than reloading. I would imagine that it would be a bit easier in civ4 to cheat due to the coding, but I'm not sure.

I take it that he did not deny cheating?

I will hold off voting for now, we need more discussion, much more.

Though frankly I am a bit glad that we would have a reason to not add him other than his behavior on the main forum.

A very definite (black ball, whatever).

Someone that belligerent and annoying should have something pretty spectacular to offer the team to warrant consideration. What does he offer us?

I read almost every single post in the Strat forum. His strategy comments are uninsightful one-liners ("Axemen are uber :thumbs up"!). He never engages in an actual strategy discussion, preferring to disappear when people disagree with him or resort to calling them idiots.

His main strength (or so he claims), namely to shock people into thinking in a different way, would unfortunately be entirely useless to our endeavour here. We already have a lot of lateral thinkers. Without the interest or ability to engage in strategy discussion, I'm afraid he would resort to causing discomfort within or between teams - for his own personal enjoyment.

Above all, his goal is personal edification as a sh!t-disturber. The rumors that he's cheated in a previous demogame (and does not seem to care) just confirms this. Seriously, what's the point in having someone like that on the team?

I urge us not to call his bluff (that he can offer us something). I only hope some other team can enjoy or stand his presence. I would not.

Hmmm. Haven't been around too much lately (playing ), so I don;t have my own formed opinion of E_N. So I guess for the moment I'll abstain...

But, and I mean this sincerely, we shouldn;t think there's a need for a smoking gun to blackball. I don;t even refer to the alleged cheating, but simply as little as Dom's comments on his level of activity/contribution in the Strat forum.

There are more than enough opportunities here at 'poly, as well as at other sites, for everyone to develop their own personal reactions to potential members, even if such is done solely subconsciously.

These DGs take an awful lot of time, work, commitment, and cooperation. And they can certainly get tough and even ugly, as we know.

If the guy don't pass your sniff test, then BB him. End'o story.

It seems Dominae beat me to it.

We don't really need antagonisers in a game like this, especially not in our own team.
I'm sure we'll encounter plenty of them during the game on opposing teams.

I thought about this a lot. I'm a generally nice, moderate guy, and I have a hard time black balling anyone.

There are always exceptions, however. E_N is such a one.
