I think his point was it wouldn't take a huge army to disrupt the foundation of a "phoenix" empire in the new world. A mere handful of units would probably be enough to seriously hamper it, because they'd be starting from scratch. For an established, successful old-world civ, those handful of units wouldn't be a problem.

      You guy's are probably right.

Maybe hire the Merc team to do some protecting in exchange of some future land or resources present on the new world....naaah!

Exactly. If the phoenix was actually showing even the slightest sign of success, that old world powers would probably even agree to put aside their differences briefly.

It just doesn't work in the MP world. I've seen variations on that theme many times. I really DO wish it would work...it's a neat idea... but it doesn't.

          Blah. It's too bad, really.

Continents, then, would be my vote. Or maybe islands.

It only works if you have a patron/protector that is also close in location to you. Vox had Lego in the PTWDG and it worked for us. When Lego left the game, GoW offered to protect us as well (good relations and some guilt on their part).

If GoW and ND had gone into a war of mutual destruction Vox might have even come back and won the game.

While I see the merit in what you are saying FP, I think the amount of discussion on the possibilities that is taking place here is a strong case forTerra Map.

The dynamics that Rhothaerill just mentioned are an amazing example of the type of things that this map opens the possibilities of.

In addition, I believe that teams that would be willing to ship off even a relatively small force to deal with a "phoenix" civ would be opening themselves up given the presence of a mercenary team in the game. Of course they could hire mercenaries to do the job for them, but then we have the economic aspect. Again, this is the strength of this map...the choices that it causes.

In addition, proximity arrangements of civs in the new world will most likely be completely different than in the old. This could cause a realignment of diplomatic initiatives. A great way to keep the game fresh and not let some alliances become to entrenched. On the other hand, it may vastly strengthen an alliance and cause others to have to band together. Again, choices.

No other map that I have seen in Civ gives the same possibilities for drastically changing the course of a game midway. This is an exciting possibility to me. And if it doesn't have the desired effect, then what have we lost? It would seem that if there are no interesting side effects to this map, then we would be playing a game very similar to a Pangea map.

It seems odd for me also so much talk about making the map and the settings so quick.

OK some of you may not want to commit to long to this game but some of us are very happy to enter into an epic journey one that we can enjoy as it develops.

I would suggest those who have issues due to being in too many demo games already reconsider whether they really want to be in another, rather than try to force the rest of us into a fast and uninteresting game.

I, for one, am definitely not partial to Terra maps and cramped starts.

That is completely true. I'm currently playing a Terra Map where I ended up on the eastern edge of the Old World bordering only Russia. Peter hated me from the begining and has been constantly warring against me. The Indians and the Egyptians however were on the far western edge and they both love me.

In the New World I started by settling a Panama-like strip of land between a northern and southern continent. The Indians settled just North of me so I started moving South. Right before knocking off for the night I noticed that the Egyptians had a fairly sizeable presense in the South.

The other thing about Terra is that the Barbs can just go to town over in the New World (literally). There were huge cities connected by pan-continental highways. And the thing that surprised the hell out of me was that these Barbs actually had grenadiers. That was a very interesting change from Civ3. Those grenadiers were a PITA for my riflemen until until I was able to upgrade them to Infantry.

In conclusion I am really liking this Terra Map

I see in its description that the Terra map is bigger than other maps. Just how much bigger? Can anyone give dimensions?

That gives me the same concern as I would with a map larger than Standard, which is that it would become unplayable on my comp.

I think a significant group of Vox would prefer either random world or random Civ
