I am certain some teams and players are early rushers habitually and in personal nature, but somehow I believe the other continent will play a role.
That is human nature. I wonder if we would see another game dynamic take place than what took place historically.
Do not forget that diplomacy will play a role here, and that the much more complex technology strategy, as well as resource, religion planning and so on would create a much more diversified, fragmented and complicated set up.
It seems someone are already flagging an early genocide, and I guess it will play out that way for some, if they are on pangea or continent, some players are early rushers and pirhanas nevertheless. I guess all teams will be very wary of such sharks sending cheasy communiques of "eternal friendship" and all the other sordid pieces of forum based demogame prose we have seen throughout the years.
However, this time around, the advent of the caravel, as well as the nature of the early explorers in a way require another "empty" continent for that wanted "Age of Discovery" mechanic to play out. I am confident this will play out well for both "veterans" in the demogame genre, as well as new players alike.
Mostly, the notion of having an old world, with the new map centric decoy in Civ4, not allowing us to juxatposition global position too soon, will make the new world to become much more an adventure than it did in Civ3.
Civ3 destroyed the new world feeling by revealing the world map from the outset. I think the "Calendar" allows the new colonial resources (sugar, spices, bananas) as well as correcting the map positioning.
I do not want a weird "gamey" map with an internal and external ring and so on. I would like the Terran Map for the shift of diplomatic and game dynamic throughtout three phases.
I had my dose of pangeas - which creates only one real diplomatic game of genocide. Archipelago would reduce the value of long ranging units, limiting cavalry UUs and so on.
Continents would just see that one player killls all on each side, or you see some gamey continental alliance be set up.
What I like with Terra, is the lack of predictability, since a demogame with such parameters can surprise everyone.
What if one player can remain diplomatic and at peace with its neighbors, and yet secretly develop colonies overseas like Spain and Portugal did? Men were killed for trying to spread these seamaps. A warmonger would risk to beat the hell out of one player, where the others may side up to colonize the other continent together.
The early genocidal rush player must convince the future victims of his bloody desires that they will indeed survive Ancient and Classical ages, and not be killed off prior to the new world exploration. Then again, if one player starts a campaign for continental domination, that player may face an alliance colonizing the new world together.
After that, the colonial era shifts into modern, and all the small islands may be crucial as well. Imagine the grand drama. And not only civ professionals can relate to it, but also those of us that likes to see "history" in its creation.
I do not want a short game. I do not want a long game.
I may want to have a game full of surprises and deep strategy. I am also sick and tired of reading cheasy communiquees from zealous teams, as well as watching politically correct UN style flame feasts squashing other teams on wrongful merits.
A Terran based game will emphasize game strategy more than anything, and reduce the focus on out-of-game methods to get a leg up on the opponent.
