    Let the debate begin!

I seem to recall support for Hunting first.

I like hunting first, no matter if we go religion or no.

Settling on the hill gives us a warrior in 8 and then a scout in another 7 (but we need hunting first) just after size 3 at which time we can do another scout or a worker depending on how the tech situation pans out.

The warrior should take the hut. If we get really lucky we could be a lock for a religion.

          Hunting.

Do we know if barbs are possible from the hut?

Dunno. I also wonder if having no cities yet has an impact. (i.e. If we should pop before or after settling the city.)

Not adjacent to borders. 60 huts popped by 60 warriors.

City founded in 3960BC, then huts popped:
                Tech 8
                Gold 30
                Map 12
                Hostile 5
                Scout 3

No city founded, popped in 4000BC:
                Tech 0
                Goild 38
                Map 11
                Hostile 0
                Scout 11

It seems that tech and hostiles get respun until gold, map or scout come up prior to settling a city.

48 huts on cultural borders with 48 warriors yields 0 hostiles, with techs/gold/maps/scouts similar to the first scenario.

My vote is for hunting first, of course, seems a very safe bet.

The sheep resource is a blessing, but on a non-river plains hill it certainly isn't enough to justify changing plans by itself, for now I favor the buddhism gambit after Hunting.

Shouldn't that be somewhere in the source code?

                        good point, i looksies.

edit: Easily confirmed that cultural pops never have bad results, and that barbarian units wont pop before you've founded a city.
I've failed to find evidence either way for popping techs before founding a city, from what I can gleen from the code it shouldn't make a difference. Basically there's a function canResearch which is used to determine if a player is allowed to recieve the good tech - if they can research it, they can have it. Technically a civ with no cities can't research a tech but I don't see any comparison testing for that. However a bunch of team statuses do factor in, and maybe they change when the first city is founded.

Settling changes the seed, so it has an impact AFAIK. We can get something different from the hut.

As to barbs from huts: I never saw barbs in the first few turns, but maybe I just got lucky.

Hunting first: I like it, but only when we can time it so we can build 1 or 2 scouts rightaway. Otherwise I'd prefer a Buddhism or Hinduism gambit.

Hut popping: at this point, I'd be willing to take the risk, and settle first. In case we get hostiles, they won't enter the cultural borders of the Eye for a while, so we only risk our initial warrior. And he's reasonable protected against barb attacks so early in the game...

Hunting, eat hut. Signaling discussion on why you go Hunting is laid out in more detail in the 'Tumbleweeds' thread. I could make an argument for a cultural pop on that hut, but I've still not seen a tech from that method, so I'd like to pop it the hard way and risk the barbs.

Mining's unlikely to be of much help to us in the short run, and we're not going to give our Workers any useful techs anytime soon, so it looks like this is a Warrior -> Scout build order. (One lousy stinking sheep in the fat cross? Waaaaa!)
