gentle politely refused, Blake did not answer my PM, and I'm still in a process of negotiation with Aginor (explaining how things work, etc.).
Unfortunately, vondrack also declined; here's his PM (reprinted with permission):
Hey Dom!
Indeed, I have sort of disappeared... but that was to be expected. Every end of year is extremely hectic for me - I do several times more business before Christmas than throughout the rest of the year. I am always hardly keeping pace... no time to spend on games at all. My last game of CIV was the memorable 3v3v3 where I was on the same team with you and dh, I think. Still remembering that one!
Gotta admit that hearing there were special requests from existing GS members to join your team gave me warm feelings. There is a number of people in GS who I truly respect and like much - and I am happy to know it is not just one-way. If I was to join a team in a DG, it would quite likely be GS - I have come to realize that my own code of honour would be closest to that of GS.
However, I am not going to join a demogame. Staying a lurker doesn't really work for me, which I learnt in the game over at MZO. If I do not actively participate in a game, I lose interest and touch... and I am not going to participate actively in a demogame again, I just cannot afford that time-wise, especially this year, as I am going to get married and move to a new house.
I know other people are able to handle this by participating, but not that actively - does not work for me, unfortunately. I either do things 100% or not at all. Considering my competitive and perfectionist nature, this usually means that whatever I get involved in, I do 100% - and that's something I really cannot afford ATM.
Think of it as if decided to quit smoking and you were offering me to "not really smoke, just watch other people smoking, maybe only have a little smoke here and there". Would not really work, would it?
I am looking forward to playing CIV with all of you, folks, here at Poly and (the beta forum) - as soon as I finally get my own copy of CIV (haven't bought one, knowing I would not be able to play before Christmas anyway - and now I am hoping the complimentary copy should be close).
Give my warmest regards to your fellow Stormians, please (feel free to post this PM, if you wish). I wish all of you a solid starting location, fair and gentlemanly rivals, no bugs, and the necessary bit of luck.
Hope to meet you in an individual game soon!
Take care,
Radek
And her eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming...
to vondrack... he'd be great here. The reference to "code of honour" got a raised eyebrow.
Somebody do please try to get Blake; I've been slowly catching up in the General and Strat fora, and his attitude and experience jump right out.
The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.
Think of it as if decided to quit smoking and you were offering me to "not really smoke, just watch other people smoking, maybe only have a little smoke here and there". Would not really work, would it?
Heh, good analogy. I totally understand. to Vondrack.

Blake has joined the civgroup, so there is our answer.
Welcome, Blake.
I PM'd Blake about this as soon as I heard the game was starting up but didn't hear back. I was worried he'd already joined another team. Glad to hear the news
