Here's what I'm going to send to Aginor, Blake and gentle. A bit long, I know.
Hi,
You may remember me from the Civ4 Strategy Forum. I'm writing to inquire if you plan to participate in the first Apolyton Civ4 Democracy Game, and if so, invite you to become a member of team Gathering Storm.
Gathering Storm has traditionally been composed of the Strat forum's best and brightest, and we hope to continue in that tradition. Hence my invitation to you.
Gathering Storm is a loosley organized group of civ players whose common interest is learning as much as possible about the game and sharing hard won lessons with others. We play to win, and have fun doing it.
In case you're new to democracy games, they're essentially play-by-email games where each player is actually an entire team. We all have our private forums where we analyze, plan, and discuss all that we do. Unlike Internet MP or SP, diplomacy is a major part of the game. Demogames are among the most challenging games you will every play.
I hope this sounds like fun to you. If you join, you can participate as much or as little as you wish ("much" being better than "little"!).

Personally, I'd yank that outta there. If one wanted to provide some background on GS, I'd say it this way:
"GS was initially created in the CivIII PTWDG. Early on in the formation of the team, it was decided that we would seek civ players whose common interest is learning as much as possible about the game and sharing hard won lessons with others. Invites were sent out to various well-known posters from the strategy forum. We were more than pleased with the results of that approach. Hence my invitation to you."
