  • Turn player, please!

    Okay, just asking around.

    1. Who wants to be turnplayer for the start?

    2. Are we going to set up backup structures?

    ------------------

Personally, I'm not going to step up for the job. And I think that at least for the first turns, it has to be a vet too: the structure we used in the previous game more or less worked, with turnthreads and specific sections with screenshots when needed. That template could be re-used (or maybe even improved upon) here.

I can do it, with a few provisions.

    1. The turn-player will not be the default for diplomatic correspondence. I think this is how turn-player burnout happens. While it makes sense that the turn-player is aware of all such communication, I do not believe that it's necessary that he/she be present or in charge of them.

    2. A set of backups will be organized. I would like to be confident that whoever is playing the turn is very knowledegeable about the in-game situation.

    3. The turn-player should get input on each and every turn! In the PTWDG, the turn-player was also the main analyzer (for micromanagement, etc.). That's a lot of work for one person. While I look forward to doing some analysis, I would prefer not to do it alone.

    4. The turn-player will serve for a set period of one or two months, after which the position will again be up for grabs. There will be no limit on the number of consecutives terms. The only reason I throw this in is to give the turn-player an "out" if he/she feels the need to let go of the responsibility (for any reason).

I think these four points are reasonable. If so, and if I do get the job, I will happily take on this great honor!
And her eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming...

I don't object to any of your points. I certainly agree on 1, it's the burden of both diplo and in-game actions that leads to burn-out.

As to analyzers: that's more the position I see myself in. Not constant, but from time to time playing different strategies for MMing, and possibly have some overarching plans as well (like e.g. the Lego buildup last time). I can't promise to be available every single day anymore (I kind of disappeared from the net last week too, but couldn't help it). If backup is needed, I certainly will consider it, but for as long as I can keep this promise to myself, I won't be regular turnplayer.

BTW, I strongly suggest we work with queues on both worker actions and build queues. This should make it possible to tone down the MMing to the most, without the need to reanalyze every single turn.

Absolutely agree that the turnplayer needs to not have too much on his plate. I'm happy you stepped up for it, Dominae!

Like DeepO, I see myself as support staff I'll analyze (although perhaps less of the MM analysis and more of the over-arching strategy analysis) and help out when needed with various tasks. I'd be willing to be a backup if absolutely necessary for turnplay, but only if (as you said), there is clear guidance from the team. I don't think I'll ever be a reliable choice for primary turnplayer, because, frankly I'm pretty sure my wife wouldn't stand for it. She accepts quite a bit of civving, but part of the (unspoken) deal is that on any given night she can demand that I not touch the computer. She does this rarely, but sometimes I civ too much

How is your wife, BTW? Got to love such civ support... I distinctly remember you telling us you were proposing

She's good. Well, her job sucks right now, but otherwise she's good. The honeymoon has been rescheduled (I had to cancel due to a flare-up of a herniated disk in my neck) for March (FYI - I'll be in New Zealand from 3/3/06 - 3/23/06), which is good. She needs some stress relief.

She doesn't play civ anymore, though. When she gets on the computer at home, it's to check her work email and whittle down her inbox (she's typically proud of having less than 100 unread emails in her inbox. She replied to an email she got in November yesterday ).

            Thanks for asking!

              Dominae for Grand Poobah!

I will serve as back up if you wish, Dom.

I started a discussion on the team for new and old. Terms can be thrashed out here or there.

I'll be willing to serve sometime, after I've seen how GS runs things and a good procedure has been set.

To assuage anyone's concern with a new recruit in such a role - in the PtWDG, I served as turnplayer in RP, as well as doing it for the Monty Python team in the PtWDGII.

I am very interested in being part of the analysis team, or maybe as a backup. Given my noob status probably not at the beginning, but later on if the team decides as such.

Everyone who wants to be is a member of the analysis team. Just get in there and do it when the time comes.

dejon, IIRC you were the military leader of RP. We need more dedicated attention to a lot of areas.

You recall correctly, I was, for a time. I had the honors of being both Chief Warrior and later Most Trusted Advisor to his excellency, King Togas.

In my second stint as Chief Warrior I recall admonishing the royals for deciding to prioritize settlement and expansion over building our thin military... (read: E_T out-argued me)

I'm not quite sure what your second sentence is saying there, nye. If you're implying something, you're better off just saying it.

The military is going to be wilder in this game than in the other.

Not only is it more complex, but it is also newer.

We need more warriors. That is what is meant.

As nye already said, please do not let your 'n00bie' status stop you from posting, all opinions are very valid. You probably won't be elected to turnplayer if Dom is also running because his track record is a bit better known, but analysis in any of the domains is appreciated from everyone.

The more discussion, the better. Even if you're unsure of yourself, throw your ideas out there for discussion. Even if a given idea is ultimately shot down, the discussion can be useful. And fun!

yeah, and you never know where your idea might pop up. We tend to take whatever comments we see, and run with them to make them the team's.

Inchon/off is a typical example: someone suggested Inchon, someone suggested Inchoff, someone suggested to try both for maximum effect, someone else suggested diversions and sneaking in unspotted, and in the end everything got combined into one big boom. Game over for Vox. A very distinct team effort, with some suggestions coming from very diverse people... perfected and integrated by the team
