  • Civics Term VI Discussion

I put forth this thread to start to discuss possible changes in civics during Term VI. Obviously, before changes occur a poll would be conducted.

Because of the current militaristic stance we are taking and the military moves I am introducing in other threads I advocate 2 specific civics.

Vassalage- The biggest gain is the +2 experience points for new units. This will allow new units to come out of the Barracks with 2 promotions as opposed to 1. This would no doubt have a significant impact on future wars. The increased cost of this civic is 16 gold per turn more than our current civic of Barbarism. Because our current troop levels will allow us to fully use the additional Vassalage benefit of +23 free units, we would actually save 7 gold per turn under Vassalage.

Organized Religion- The gain here is two-fold. Missionaries without Monastaries allows for the more rapid deployment of religions. The immediate benefit would be for the state religion (I assume Islam because we founded it and it is less vulnerable than Bombay, center of Confucianism.) This would also allow for the spread of other religions in anticipation of the eventual adoption of Free Religion.

The second benefit of Organized religion is the production bonus of +25% for buildings/wonders for those cities that posess the state religion. All cities still have buildings to construct so the benefit could be felt across the board.
Yes, negotiations could take some time.

I humbly apologize to Minister tism for overstepping my boundaries.

Since civics are not part of my domain I cannot ensure a poll would be conducted before they change. I do suggest that before such a significant change occurs that the citizens of Concordia be polled.

I think a better though i dont truly know the current tech status having not viewed a save recently would be free religion, this should be our goal to boost our sciences and increase our happiness.

Plus then the one true religion of The Sacred Order of the Banana would still reign supremem in Concordia!

I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

          A Look at Free Speech

Free Speech is a wonderful civic at the appropriate time. The +2 Commerce per Town can have a powerful impact. If Culture is important the +100% does fabulous things. Now is not the right time.

If this can be done with no anarchy either through a Spiritual leader trait (which we do not have) or through UN Resolution, there is no cost to make the change.

For us there is a cost. This civic is being advocated for the Commerce bonus so let us look at the Commerce cost.

In 1583 AD we are generating 497 Commerce per turn. If we could and did change to Free Speech this turn it would result in 2 turns of anarchy. Therefore the cost of this civic is 994 Commerce. How long would it take to recoup that cost?

          We currently have 7 Towns.
An 8th is due in 1 turn.
          A 9th is due in 18 turns.
          A 10th is due in 22 turns.
An 11th is due in 24 turns.
          A 12th is due in 25 turns.
The 13th and 14th are due 29 turns from now.
A 15th is due 41 turns from now.
A 16th is due 45 turns from now.

          So the payback looks like:

          (7 Towns x 2 Commerce) x 1 GameTurn + (8Tx2C)x16GT + (9Tx2C)x4GT + (10Tx2C)x2GT + (11Tx2C)x1GT + (12Tx2C)x4GT + (14Tx2C)x12GT + (15Tx2C)x4GT + (16Tx2C)x2GT

On turn 46 Free Speech will have netted an increase of 1020 Commerce or 26 more than lost by the 2 turns of anarchy.

Free Speech is a great civic at the right time. Now is not the right time.

Of the civics mentioned, Free Religion and Free Speech make the most sense.

Bear in mind that Org Religion needs two periods of anarchy (4 turns?!) because you also have to HAVE a state religion.

And the gains from Vassalage are pitifully small to warrant a switch, particularly with Free Speech available soon

Free Religion and Free Speech are the ones to go with, IMO.

And, as both are made available by Liberalism, at the same time, so

              by a single change.

              Best regards,
