  • Which nation as our long-term allies

I thought a separate thread might be desirable here to start airing some views early on long-term alliances of peaceful relationships with the other nations. Those we know include Napoleon, Gandhi and Montezuma although we also know that Alexander and the Americans were there at some stage. It has also been suggested that Cyrus is, or was, around at some time on that island.

Now the fact that Athens and Washington are owned by Aztecs and France respectively suggests that both Greece and America have been overrun. However, we have no conclusive proof of this so will just have to see what our explorers find. Of the three nations, France looks to be the clear powerhouse there but is technologically weak while India looks to be the local tech leader (although I have no details on Aztecs).

It seems that relations between these civilisation is irretrievable. They will remain as worst enemies unless they choose to make us their worst enemy. So the question is therefore which side we wish to choose as our long term trading partner. Which will we gain most from and which is the greatest threat to us.

At the moment, I’d argue in favour or keeping relations with France healthy. Except now we have to make them healthy because, well I don’t need to explain why the French have a problem with us. If the worst comes to the worst – and the Aztecs clearly have the capacity for conquest - then we could even find ourselves with no trade at all from this continent thus rendering Astronomy almost useless.

Here’s to a coherent international strategy. If we fail here, then we will have no choice but to open their cities to trade through force since the long term prospect of a shared continent between a friendly France and Aztec nation and widespread religion is something that does not bear thinking about.

But France also has two holy cities! It´d be a shame to let those go to waste...

I would suggest teaming up with India and pumping them for tech, with the aim to nuke France off the face of the planet (I'm English, what did you expect my feelings to be about the French?).

But why wait for nukes - the longer we wait the harder it will be.

Let's at least weaken the frogs now - reduce their territory, by liberating some of it for ourselves, then align with the Indians, bukky, sorry, work with them to our advantage, then clobber the frogs again!

Very sensible comments all round here I see. Is there any risk that, come the discovery of scientific method, we might also find a brain-cell lurking somewhere in the AGG? It’s all very well to talk boldly of war with France but I don’t see any clear plans here. Maybe someone will tell us where we get all the ships and how many troops we are going to need to defeat a 12 city France which has been successfully captured cities and probably destroyed a civilisation.

As to the suggestion that we ally with India, well we have little information about them except that they have lost at least one city. This is the sort of civ that gets eaten alive by the likes of Monty and it possible that we will gain no benefit from Gandhi as an ally.

Perhaps a few comments from people with something to say other than “Let’s declare war”. That’s sooooo yesterday.

                      So, I must comment

                      IMHO:

First, explore that east continent, know about the three unknow civs

and look closely the Astec/Indian war.

While, go on develop our continent, increase all goods, mostly gold

                      and research.

Build a navy; do not forget ground troops (peace and war, just as we

want and never because we have no other solution).

Please, allow to remind what everybody knows: religion gives happy,

Holy city gives intelligence, just Holy Shrine gives gold.

So, I would like we grab an Holy Shrine at due time, and it looks,

Bombay is the only one. That must be considered.

And a long term ally? I don't know, if any, explore more first.

                      Best regards,

                        Six words:

                        Take the shrines
                        sue for peace

I only see one shrine. We’ll gain little value from a holy city since PE will be producing the next 4-5 GP and none of them are gonna be Prophets.

Well I’ve had a little think about this and feel the weight of support should be with France. Technologically they are backward and they are not going to be catching up quickly with 12 cities and still needing to research CoL. I think we would be doing him a small favour by capturing some of those cities from him.

Napoleon is nonetheless quite strong so would put up an awkward fight for us and is one tech away from getting War Elephants to make him an even tougher nut to crack. Despite his tech deficit, our “beach-head” would be harder to hold

The benefits of friendly relations with Napoleon is that he has some resources we like and more cities to trade with.

Contrast this with Gandhi would is more advanced a smaller, we’ve got an easier target there. Despite the fact that he has longbows, the war with Aztecs will probably weaken him. Furthermore, he has a well-developed religion there and it has a shrine. Any target should probably be Indian.

                            Is there a map somewhere?

I'd favour Gandhi and at the same time trying to have good relations to the French, but that is dependant on me not lacking important info(like one of them being landlocked).

As Fed so eloquently put it in post #11, we should gain as much info as we can about our eastern neighbours, all the while paying particular attention to the Aztec/Indian situation.

As far as I am concerned there are two cities on this continent that stand head and shoulders above the rest as a possible future targets.

                              i. Olmec for it's Gem deposits, but we can always go down the friendly path and trade with him for these in a maximum of 10 turns.

ii. Bombay for it's Holy Shrine. This, in my eyes, should be our prime target, if we 'must' have a target. As has been stated numerous times in the past, even if we were to get our own religion it would take a very long time to develop a holy shrine. Here we have one on our doorstep, and a beach-head onto the eastern continent. i suggest we research the techs required to upgrade our military, be prepared and ever vigilant and strike when the time is right for us!
