MINISTER OF STATE OFFICE : TERM V

    INTRODUCTION

Welcome all to the Minister of State Term V Office. I am stoked to have been voted in for a third term in this office. It must mean I'm doing something right! [or that not one else wants to do it ]

In this term I will encourage as much exploration as possible and even endeavour to circumnavigate the globe! It is my hope to meet many other civilisations and trade knowledge and resources with them where appropriate and advantageous to Concordia. I would also like to see more Great People being nurtured and put to good use building Academies and making important trade missions to foreign lands.

I hope that you will all do what you can to aide these plans and have your say when issues arise. I thank you for your support in the elections and I hope that you will continue your support throughout this term.

    Long Live Concordia!!

P.S. Here are some postcards I brought back

I know it’s quite a lot to ask here but can we get some sort of cross-referenced “Relations” grid for our new friends across the water. Since we’ve stumbled across a war-zone, we need to have a much clearer idea of what we are doing when we trade with one or other of these nations. Until we know the extent of their lands and their cities, we might be shooting ourselves in the foot if we find that several AI-civs decide to close their borders because of our trading with their worst enemy.

Of course, this should have been done before and I rather think the trading of Calendar to Gandhi for Monarchy was a very foolish move. The Aztecs and France are most likely the big powers on that continent and we’ve basically gained about 400 beakers – what we needed to finish Monarchy – for the risk that the Aztecs and France will close their borders to us and our explorers may then have limited room for doing their jobs.

What is even worse is that overseas cities may be closed to trade to us limiting our scope for benefiting from our Great Lighthouse.

Now it seems to me somewhat regrettable that no-one seemed to mention this during the chat-room. Maybe we still have too much of an Axe-Grinding nature in our “international relations” and we will find some way to blame the French and Aztecs for disliking us and forget the fact that we were the ones who are at fault in this case.

All in all, we need more information and a clearer international policy rather than blundering in their with no idea of the long-term ramifications.

          OK..Rant over..

Povo Este just produced a GMerchant. Now the question is to find how

            to best use him.

Lightbulb would give civil service, an useful tech, but a poor choice to

the GP. A trade mission, while appealing and good, is not the way

            to

            go,too.

To take the most profit from the GP we must settle him in our gold city.

As we have no Holy city, we must choice the best commerce city, thatis free to the task. The obvious candidate is Paddyton, our best (and

            very good) commerce city, with reasonable hammers to build infra;

its weakness is small food surplus, and the GM helps here.

The gold boost, multiplied by the market now, short term by grocer

and bank, later by Wall Street (that Povo Este cannot build and MTT

shall not) shall be a great help, even the solution, to our budget.

            Best regards,

I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

Please make your votes and give your thoughts on what to do with the Great Merchant who has just been 'born' in Povo Este-fed.

How shall we use our Great Merchant?

                Bananas for everyone!

Since we’re now at a key stage in the larger game, I thought I’d add a few comments/suggestions. Some of these a merely cosmetic.

                    1) We have Globe Library showing as a world wonder
                    2) We should be able to figure out other wonders from the Top 5 cities page
                    3) Might I suggest we divide resources into the three categories of Strategic, Luxury, Food. This could also then order them into groups depending on the bonus buildings (ie 3 granary resources shown together, then 3 harbour, then 4 supermarket, then the lone grocer)

The main point of this post though is to discuss the merits of trading to improve “relative” strength. As a concept you’ll be familiar with this at it’s very basic level where we will prefer to trade, say Theology for Metal Casting rather than Philosophy for Literature, Machinery and Compass. Although we get more from the second option, the other party to the agreement does even better. The same situation would arise if we could make the same deal with two nations but chose to make it with the one who was most technologically behind.

If we concentrate on relative strength we might end up developing a little slower but benefit because our rivals will develop even slower. So a trade for Feudalism may not even be in our long term interests if it allows another nation to narrow the game or enable that nation to trade on with others.

At a technological level we are about 2 complete techs ahead of India, 4 ahead of Aztecs and a huge 10 ahead of Napoleon. By trading with India we increase their chance of narrowing the tech deficit but the gap with Napoleon is so large that we lose little by trading here. I also think Napoleon might be in a position to extort techs from India so we might still gain a little by selling them to him before he can do this. By selling cheaply we improve our relations with France to maintain trade routes. Although preferable is the cheap trade gift of which we have many.

We can also use tech trading to remove anomalies between other nations. Gandhi has Alphabet, Literature and Drama while Monty has Metal Casting and Philo (but won’t trade the later). By trading Metal Casting to Gandhi, this leaves nothing that Monty can offer. Note that this is just an example since there reasons why we might not want to maintain trade with India. In any case Gandhi and Monty are not best of friends so I doubt they will trade. But if we find other nations there then we might find some who would trade amongst themselves so we should use our advantage to remove these “discrepancies”.

p.s. I couldn’t figure out why Gandhi was being greedy asking Metals and Compass for Feudalism. Isn’t this a broadly even deal?

Could you advise us on your views of the pros and cons of such a move.

As I have said in another thread, I think that obtaining a Holy City and Shrine is well worth the effort required to go to war. Bombay is so far the only city that has both these things and by taking this city we could in effect close off access to and from the 'Banana Straits'.

As to the pros and cons, here are a few to chew on.

Going back to war will cost us money and hence tech research will decrease, not to mention the fact that a city so far from our capital will be debilitating to our economy. However, the monetary benefit of taking a Holy Shrine could potentially be very profitable. This will take some time however, as we will need to spread this religion to our continent (and eventually across the globe) in order to reap the high rewards.

                            Straits!

Also, IMO I don't think that any other civ on our neighbouring continent would greatly object to our going to war with Gandhi. In fact, we may even get offers of military support from Monty as they are currently enduring 10 turns of uneasy peace. Napolean and Monty are close trading buddies at the moment, while Alexander is a bit of a mystery as he doesn't seem to have a strong relationship with any of the civs we have currently met.
