    The story of the Creation

In the beginning there was no sky, no sea, no earth and no Gods. There was only darkness, only Te Kore, the Nothingness. The very beginning was made from nothing. From this nothingness, the primal parents of the Maori came, Papatuanuku, the Earth mother, and Ranginui, the Sky father.

Papatuanuku and Ranginui came together, embracing in the darkness, and had 70 male children. These offspring became the gods of the Maori However, the children of Papatuanuku and Ranginui were locked in their parents embrace, in eternal darkness, and yearned to see some light. They eventually decided that their parents should be separated, and had a meeting to decide what should be done.

They considered for a long time - should Rangi and Papa be killed? Or shall they be forced to separate?

Finally, Tumatauenga, the god of War, said "Let us kill our parents". However, Tane-Mahuta, the god of man and forests, and all which inhabits the forests, thought that Rangi and Papa should be separated. He thought that Ranginui should go up above, to the sky, and that Papatuanuku should should go below, to dwell on earth. All the children, including Tu, the God of War, agreed with Tane.

Tawhiri Matea, the god of winds and storms was the only child who did not wish for his parents to be separated. He feared that his kingdom would be overthrown. One by one the children tried to separate their parents. Rongomatane, the god and father of cultivated foods, tried without success. Haumia Tiketike, god of uncultivated food also tried.

Then it was the turn of Tangaroa, the god of the sea, and Tumatauenga, the god of war, but neither Tangaroa nor Tumatauenga could separate their parents.

Lastly Tane-Mahuta rose. Strong as the kauri tree, he placed his shoulders against his mother Papatuanuku and his feet against his father Ranginui, and he pushed hard, for a very long time, straining and heaving all the while. Rangi and Papa cried in pain, asking their sons" why do you wish to destroy our love?"

After a long time Tane finally managed to separate Rangi and Papa, and for the first time the children saw the light of day (ao Marama) come streaming in. Once this happened, Tawhiri Matea, the god of winds and storms, and who had been against the separation of his parents, left for the sky to join his father.

The turbulent winds and storms on earth are caused by Tawhiri Matea, in revenge for this brother's acts.

Now that the separation of Papatuanuku and Ranginui was complete, and there was a sky and an earth. However, there was just one missing element, and Tane decided to create a female. From an area named Kura-waka Tane took some clay, and modeled it into a woman. He then breathed life into it, and created Hine-ahu-one - the earth formed maiden.

Tane and Hine had a beautiful daughter called Hinetitama. When Hinetitama grew, she had daughters to Tane. One day Hinetitama asked Tane who her father was, and on discovering that Tane was the father of her children, she fled with shame into the night, to a place called Rarohenga, the underworld. From then on she became known as Hine-nui-te-po, the goddess of the night.
Let your every day be full of joy, love the child that holds your hand, let your wife delight in your embrace, for these alone are the concerns of humanity.

The legend of Maui and the magic fishhook.

Maui was a demi-god, who lived in Hawaiiki. He possessed magic powers that not all of his family knew about.

One day when he was very young, he hid in the bottom of his brothers' boat in order to go out fishing with them. Once out at sea, Maui was discovered by his brothers, but they were not able to take him back to shore as Maui made use of his magic powers, making the shoreline seem much further away than it was in reality.

So the brothers continued rowing, and once they were far out into the ocean Maui dropped his magic fishhook over the side of the waka. After a while he felt a strong tug on the line. This seemed to be too strong a tug to be any ordinary fish, so Maui called to his brothers for assistance.

After much straining and pulling, up suddenly surfaced Te Ika a Maui (the fish of Maui), known today as the North Island of New Zealand. Maui told his brothers that the Gods might be angry about this, and he asked his brothers to wait while he went to make peace with the Gods.

However, once Maui had gone his brothers began to argue among themselves about the possession of this new land. They took out their weapons and started pounding away at the catch. The blows on the land created the many mountains and valleys of the North Island today.

The South Island is known as Te Waka a Maui (the waka of Maui). Stewart Island, which lies at the very bottom of New Zealand, is known as Te Punga a Maui (Maui's anchor), as it was the anchor holding Maui's waka as he pulled in the giant fish.
Let your every day be full of joy, love the child that holds your hand, let your wife delight in your embrace, for these alone are the concerns of humanity.

Nugog, and the discovery of team Southern Cross

Although Maui fished up the North and South Islands of New Zealand, it was the great navigator Nugog who discovered team Southern Cross.

Nugog lived in Apolyton , mythical ancestral homeland of Civilization. Nugog had a short, but illustrious history at Apolyton. From the early days of grappling with posting and threading, (not to mention the IRC debacles), he rose meteorically to lead the nation of Concordia to a glorious domination win and was immortalised forever in a numerous news articles. Not one to rest on his laurels, one day Nugog had the idea of sailing away from the public lands of Apolyton in search of a secluded paradise for team Southern Cross. He planned to set up an enlightened civilization where all are free to enjoy the plentiful bounties of life, to live in the splendor of Warlords Pitboss Democracy gaming and to blanket spam various other lesser civilizations that were forming at that time. First he had to find a vessel to navigate the turbulent waters of The World Wide Web, so he called upon a trusty friend and co-habitant of Apolyton called Zoid.

Zoid was a master canoe maker, a scholar of tongues, an enthusiastic eater of lightly steamed organic vegetables, a die hard capitalist, and a frequent patron of the OT threads. He was intrigued by Nugog's quest to find a peaceful, tranquil haven for a small, but enthusiastic group of like minded individuals. Zoid fabricated a huge ocean going canoe from a large tree and named it M/S Posidonken. Many long, tiresome hours did Zoid spend laboriously crafting the canoe, carving here, shaving there, until it truly was fit for the epic journey that lay ahead. Nugog was overjoyed when he saw what Zoid had created, but soon came to realise that he would need more friends to accompany him on his journey and co-habitate with him in their soon to be found paradise. He needed a man of many great skills, one with a keen insight into the inner working of a nation, one who had a great deal of time to delve deep into the hidden mysteries of Civilizations. Only one man sprang to mind, Fed1943!!!

Fed1943, riddler of riddles, master of the understatement, sage of saginess (variegated, not green or purple, or bloody pineapple), tweaker of tweaky things, listened in intent silence as Nugog gushed forth about his ideas for an Apolytonian Utopia. When Nugog had said all he could and ran out of words to describe his quest Fed sat motionless, in deep contemplation about all that he had heard. Minutes passed, hours, days, then as Nugog began to despair that Fed had fallen asleep, he nodded once, as a knowing smile spread across his face. Nugog was overjoyed, another piece of his master plan had fallen into place. The Lord of moving a workforce from one tile to another at seemingly random, but ultimately precise times, had given his consent and signed up for the long ride to The Private Forum of Southern Cross.

Nugog ticked the little box he had made for ticking on just such an occasion and turned his thoughts to the next conundrum. Who could he press-gang enroll to handle the team finances, research and witty little poems and songs that all great civilizations are built on?

        Enter stage left, FeMme.

Queen of tight purse strings, shield-maiden of the melodically challenged, sorceress of the vibe!!! To be perfectly honest FeMme didn't need much convincing to sign up for Nugog's plan. Once she found out she would be in complete control of all the cash, to spend as, and when, she pleased, she signed on the dotted line quicker than you can say 'All expenses paid hedonistic sojourn to Civ heaven' – well much quicker than that in fact. Off she skipped and frantically packed her rucksack, not forgetting her hairdryer and lippy. Despite the ease of his latest enrollment Nugog was troubled, there was still a piece of his Utopian jigsaw puzzle missing.

        Megalomaniacal team dictator, check;

        Crazed boat building vegetarian, check:

        Riddling, aloof tweaker, check:

Tight fisted, yet impulsive rock super-starette, check:

He still needed someone to chart and record an account of the epic journey ahead. He thought and thought and thought on this matter until his head felt like it was going to explode, no-one fitted the job description. Then it came to him, RobWorham was shackled to FeMme in matrimonial bliss ( ) so he would have to come along anyway, so instead of having a free ride he would have to earn his keep in any way he could.

So RobWorham was officially enrolled as Jack of all trades, master of none; writer of overly long self indulgent introductions, poster of insanely lengthy, confusingly detailed strategic analysis that had no end result or conclusion and served only to utterly confuse all team members, driver of the Fort Street ice-cream truck, and spammeister apprentice to Overlord Nugog.

Nugog checked the final box in his do it yourself Megalomaniac Tyrannical Oppressing Dictator to a small, but perfectly formed team in the first Apolyton Warlords Pitboss Democracy Game checklist.

After cracking his metaphorical whip of organisation, and collecting up the various bits and pieces that he needed for the long journey ahead Nugog and gang boarded M/S Posidonken and set off into the rosy sunset that inevitably leads to all things good...........

After some time of navigating, Nugog sighted the islands of New Zealand, which appeared as land lying beneath a cloud. Because of this, they named the islands Aotearoa, Land of the Long White Cloud. As Nugog and his crew were sailing along the coast of this new land, they disturbed a giant octopus, who was hiding in a coastal cave. Terrified at the sight of a strange canoe filled with human beings, the huge octopus swam rapidly in front of M/S Posidonken and took flight, passing through the strait between the North and South Islands. Nugog followed the octopus, and discovered modern Cook Strait. Nugog and M/S Posidonken eventually caught up with the giant octopus. In defence, the octopus whipped its enormous tentacles around the canoe, intent on devouring the whole canoe. During the furious battle which followed with the sea monster, it became obvious that M/S Posidonken was in great danger of breaking up.However, Nugog suddenly had an idea, and threw a large water gourd overboard. The octopus, thinking that a man had fallen over, released it's tentacles from M/S Posidonken and turned to attack the gourd. Nugog seized this opportunity, and waited until the octopus was entwined around the gourd.Nugog then attacked the head of the octopus with his adze, and the octopus died. With his adze, Nugog then cut several islands away from the South Island, and several islands away from the North Island, including the island of Kapiti. After passing through Cook Strait Nugog headed south and settled in an area he named Ôtautahi. Otautahi was to be the home of Southern Cross, from this fledgling village, nestled between the hills and the sea a great civilization was destined to be born, to be nurtured by the caring hands of the self named Quintessential Quintet, to repel all invaders, to live in harmony with the land, to climb to great technological heights and maybe even to one day set forth, once they had tired of an earth bound paradise, to found a stellar Utopia in an Alpha Centauri II Democracy Game.....................

                    Excellent work Rob
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.
