  • Determining The Map -> Isolation Scale

This is the first poll of a series to follow that altogether will determine what type of map will be used.

Choose the isolation extent you prefer.

High isolation for late interaction with other teams, late diplomacy, early peaceful expansion. Can favor specific leader traits and benefit the teams that will make contact first.

Medium isolation for a more balanced game. Not early yet not late interaction with other teams. Everything is more or less balanced, and surprises or reversals are less likely to happen in earlier stages.

No isolation for early and intense interaction with other teams, early diplomacy, early wars. More difficult to manage right from the beginning. Might favor specific leader traits and more active teams in terms of diplomacy or unbalance the game if certain strategies are successfully followed early in the game. More likely the game is accelerated in overall.

I want everyone contactable by galleys. Whatever that works out to on your scale.

(requiring some culture investment to bridge a little gap counts as contactable by galleys in my book)

yep Uno has it spot on, the map needs designing somewhat to ensure this.

Can we have team polls rather than player polls? I'd think it's much more reasonable to have each team to have a vote in matters like this rather than each person who walks into the forum?

In any event, what do these things mean (high/medium/none)? Does this solely refer to spacing, or does it also include whether each team has its own continent not reachable by galley or somesuch?

Player oriented polls are kind faster and should have the same effect unless you suspect people that are not part of any team vote too and can affect the outcome. Are there any log files that can reveal that?

It means how much teams want to interact with each other in-game, during the initial stages of the game. For example if people wish high isolation that would most likely mean each team would have their own island/continent with ocean between these islands/continents. If no isolation then something like pangaea, high sea level and perhaps large instead of huge.

The reasoning is that instead of starting a poll with a dozen options to select from we can greatly narrow the options with three polls, two of them have already been posted.

However if the teams feel they're ready to act collectively (some might still forming though they seem ready) perhaps it would be more efficiently if each would present their preference on the map directly.

Just out of curiousity, how are you going to implement these isolation levels? Are we doing a custom map or is there a natural grouping of existing map types to the isolation levels?

It seems to me that it would be tough to do a "medium" isolation level unless you perhaps had everyone on their own island/continent which could be reached by Galley.

Medium isolation could mean for instance archipelago with coastal plots connecting most of the islands so being reachable by triremes/galleons, or continents.

I think snoopy has a point anyway, since all teams have more or less formed now perhaps it is time to pass the decision to team level...
