  • The Map ???

So, we have seven teams, and maybe an eighth might join. On that basis, what map do we want to play on? I suggest we discuss and toss around ideas, and then take those with the most support through to a poll.

Ok - my perspective is that we do not do continents. A: it has been done lots of times and B: it leads to very narrow diplomatic options in the early game, with 2 or 3 or 4 civs ona continent. This game was intended to be different, and more dynamic. Lets pick a map that does that.

IMO, the stringy pangaea map is still a great demo game map. The sea and navies still play an integral part - and yet civs are not separated from each other until caravels come along.

And given the relationship between the map and leader traits and civ starting techs, we need to decide:

      Do we:

A: Pick the map - and then do the civ choice thing?

      or

B: Pick civs and possibly generate a random, or maybe a shuffle map?

Speaking just for myself, not for the team, I would like option A,

that is, first decide map, then choose civs.

And I also like very much pangea.

        Best regards,

Thanks for the input fed. I think in this game that the teams are small enough that having individuals decide the settings - as opposed to the old approach one vote per team - makes sense.

The Pirate Team demands an ARRchipelago map.

            (sorry, couldn't resist.)

A shuffle map would be interesting, but it's likely (in my experience with it) to come out continents which, as you say, is just like all other demogames.

I'm personally quite fond of the Inland sea map. Navies play a bigger role than in pangaea, yet contact comes just as quick. They are more 'artificial' though, with no wrapping.

              Very good!

And yes, inland sea makes for an interesting map - the Bohemian Epic pitboss is using this map - but as you say, no wrapping.

( I can see Christopher Columbus and Bugs Bunny debating it now ..."The world, she's a flat!")

Fractal, maybe? I think you would need a reviewer to check it out beforehand, though...

                    or Ring, or Wheel

We could always add a toroidal wrap to really make things interesting!!

I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

I do like Archipelago but with large islands.

I think we should also think of other alternatives too like Highlands or Lakes. They might seem restrictive in a way but can prove to be interesting and fun.

And how about the size of the map? Does size matters? Of course it does!

I find large for 7/8 teams kind small but it will accelerate things. Huge on the other hand is kind, well huge

Hi! I will be part of the SCS team. Someone may remember me from the last PTW DG…

Im not yet speaking in name of the team, just as a personal opinion.

I preferred a random map, in continents . Islands will make to boring the first turns and that generally make people abandon the game...
