  • Warlords Pitboss Democracy Game

I am thinking that there may be several different versions of game started here - including the 1vs1 deathmatch proposed earlier. I mentioned I had written up a proposal for a pitboss based game - well here it is for consideration and to get some discussion going.

Europe in Flames - A MP Demo Game Proposal

The pbem demo game is running along nicely on vanilla civ. But now warlords is out. Also, the pitboss feature, IMHO, offers a unique opportunity for a second demo game. Here is my idea:

Seven or Eight teams - all will be European (Including Greece and Turkey but excluding Rome). All standard victory conditions.

The teams will be first come first served, with one team reserved for Snoopy369 and a special crowd we hope he can recruit.

Teams will be assigned randomly to one of the civs - ie you do not get to pick, and secondly, no team Bananas or Sarantiums - your team will be that European nation.

The map will be a randomly generated pangaea map, reviewed by an administrator or two to make sure it is reasonably fair.

The game will be played as a pitboss game, with a 24 hour time limit per turn (I can hear the screams already - hear me out). The 24 hour rule will radically alter the dynamics of demo games. The first, and most important benefit is that the game will be time limited. We know the maximum time it will run to. The other side of the coin is that traditional governance structures currently in place in demo game teams may well not work. A team has to think quickly, or at least have a leadership empowered and guided to act quickly. To that end, a team should ensure it has a sufficient number of knowledgeable and available players to play their turns.

It is anticipated that the pace of game will maintain interest. Teams should meet early, and result in an active public forum. Historical roleplay is a possibility. Diplomacy may well be frenetic and hit an miss given the game and everyone's RL time limitations. The game should be a much more of a living, breathing entity than some demo games have been or are. Not that the slower games are bad - I for one love them - but this should be a different gaming experience.

The civs and leaders I propose are:

    Celts - Brennus
    English - Elizabeth
    French - Louis
    Germans - Frederick
    Greeks - Alexander
    Ottomans- Mehmed
    Russians - Catherine or Peter
    Spanish - Isabella

We will need admins who are familiar with both demo games, and the technical and gaming dynamic aspects of a pitboss MP game. (vondrack? F-P? Trip? Others?)
That was what I had prepared originally, and I'm sure others will have their own ideas.

One of the key considerations here will be the length of the turn - conmcb25 was suggesting 48 or 72 hours to allow team input.

The point to remember in a pitboss game is that, from my understanding, ONLY ONE TEAM MEMBER CAN BE LOGGED IN AT A TIME, CHECKING OUT THE SITUATION. This changes the dynamic of the demo game concept considerably.

The other key consideration is the size of the team, and this is related to the above. If you have a 15 person team with 24 hour turns, well, good luck. I suppose someone could log on just as the turn starts, post a pic, get input, and play the turn. It seems to me that larger teams will require longer turns.

In the Europe in Flames game I was proposing above, I was thinking of 4 or 5 players per team. That seems like a reasonable number to ensure you have someone to play the turn, allow every one to have a peek and provide input, and still maintain the 'feel' and 'intent' of a democracy game. It could at times be chaotic, but it would be quick and no doubt fun.

Would be interested in folks' take on this.

Of course, Screenshots taken by one person can help keep everyone from having to even have the game to participate.

True - and then the pitboss format simply becomes the "mechanism" to keep the game on track.

Pitboss, I really think we should try this via demogaming.
