  • Calakmul: Keep or Raze?

We need to decide this within the next 48 hours or so, so I decided to put this in a thread to foucs the discussion.

According to his post in the turnplayer thread, Sullla is cooking up a plan to use Calakmul as a naval base. This is fine so long as PAL don't resettle The Warning (maybe they should call it The Humbling if they do).

If PAL does resettle then they will own the Fish because of the culture they've put into these tiles over the millennia. I think they'll also be able to claim the 3rd ring (i.e. right up to Calakmul itself) fairly easily as well.

If we raze Calakmul, then we can settle inland (Corn and hills) which I think would make a handy unit pump on our eastern flank.

I'd rather keep the city, because even if PAL gets back their cultural control, it's good to have an extra naval base in the channel. We have plenty of inland cities, but few high production coastal cities.

Are you sure the re-settled city gets the benefit from the old culture?

I am in favour of keeping Calakmul.

This is a joke, right? Calakmul will come at size 10+, very likely with some infrastructure intact, in a highly strategic location on the Channel.

Yes, we do want to keep the city. (We want to keep all of the remaining Imperio cities, actually.)

No I'm quite serious: it will be strangled by PAL's culture, so we risk not being able to move any ships in and out of there because of closed borders, and PAL will be able to see right into the city as well. If you're fine with that then we can keep it, but I'm not sure of the strategic advantage of doing so.

            I will ask again:
Surely a new founded city will not get instant border pops just because there is old culture in that area???

It won't get instant border pops, but when it does pop borders it will claim the tiles from us because of the culture The Warning exerted on those tiles.

Definitely keep. Ships can't be landlocked there, the tile 1SE cannot ever have any PAL culture because it's 2SW of the nearest land point on the other continent. Just logged in and confirmed that it has no Egyptian culture despite being 3rd ring for (the remains of) The Warning. Agree with Sullla on his points too.

Even if we never get control of a single water tile - and I think we will, PAL re-settling The Warning not withstanding - Calakmul comes with an irrigated corn tile (6 food!) and a ton of river grassland tiles. Keeper all the way.

Keep, the inland tiles are fine to work.
