If you like odder books, Thomas Pynchon is always good, crying of lot 49 is shorter, but I enjoyed V as well.

100 years of solitude is very good(by Gabriel García Márquez)

2nding Pratchett if you are looking for humor, all his books are short though. --Also douglas adams if you haven't read the hitchhikers series yet.

For fantasy, terry brooks is good, if you like military fantasy, glen cook's the black company is also good. I also like Stephen brust's Vlad Talos series and some of Marion Zimmer Bradley's darkover novels(well they sorta fit in the fantasy/sci realm). I also tend to like some of the Mercedes lackey books. I'm sure there's also plenty I'm forgetting here .

For classic scifi, starship troopers or the forever war. Newer scifi, I enjoyed John Ringo's Looking Glass series and the Honor Harrington books by weber. --Mote in gods eye was very good as well.

Alt-history, david drake's belisarian series is entertaining.

William Gibson if you [like/haven't tried any] cyberpunk(I'd suggest neuromancer to start with).

I tend to like Modesitt as well(either the order/chaos stuff or some of his standalone scfi books)

I pity the fool who hasn't read Pratchett yet.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

I can only take Pratchett's books in small doses. Apparently, Pratchett the man is a drop kick.

I've never gotten the worship for Pratchett. His material is quite inventive, but that's not quite the same thing as funny. I've read a couple Discworld books, and while the creativity does stand out, the humor really isn't there for me.

Best sci-fi I've read lately is The Golden Age by John C. Wright. It's quite heavy and might be just the thing for an extended plane ride. It's far-future but plausibly hard SF with a dose of philosophy. A sample: Suppose you want to anticipate a decision your adversary will make. You have the technology to construct a perfect computer simulation of your adversary's mind. Does that simulation have sentience and civil rights?

Also I spent most of my commuting time last year with John Grisham books. Snappy, readable, and the perfect material to read in 15-minute train ride increments.

In that case David Gemmel is one of the best writers in the genre.
