Day 1 update: England finish on 336/7, a pretty even day I think. England were looking very shaky at 90/3, but good partnerships between Collingwood and Pietersen, then Prior and Flintoff recovered things. I was impressed by the bowling of Siddle.

Explanation: they scored 336 runs yesterday, which is a decent amount if not spectacular. 7 of their batsmen were out, including all of their specialist batsmen. Australia need to take 3 more wickets, which should not take too long because england only have their specialist bowlers in now, and then they will have their turn to bat.

You know, when I try to explain to people what I do at my job, they give up after a few minutes.

I feel the same about this game. When I was studying in England, I watched a team practising. It looked like half of them were just standing around scattered on that big field, doing nothing all afternoon.

Well, aren't those the guys who are supposed to catch the ball and throw it back? It looked to me, that they had very little to do. maybe the team I was watching, wasn't very good.

@mh - that is totally cool. I walk through GCT in New York every day and I really think there is an application for fluid dynamics with regards to the placement of Police Officers within this building. They always stand about 3 feet from a corner and act as crowd eddie makers - totally annoying.

BTW: England belted 99 runs this morning. I would say England 1, Australia 0 at the moment. I thought Day 1 was even with England having missed some great opportunities (all batsman got a start, none made a big score). I don't see Australia winning this game at this stage, they are playing not to lose.

Edit: Unless Australia get close to England on the first innings and then England has a melt down (ie scoring only 150) in their second innings ... it has happened before.

Yeah, advantage England at the moment, but Australia does have batsmen capable of getting big scores pretty rapidly. Wicket's a bit dead, so the smart money's on a draw.

Well, their purpose isn't to keep order or to move the crowd. Their purpose is just to look like Something Is Being Done for security. Being in the way and annoying is a fine way to do that.

Back to the topic, I've never watched cricket but have read a fair bit and I think I have a good grasp of the sport. Of course I've grown up on baseball so seeing lots of fielders standing around is nothing unusual. I don't suppose anyone's got a link for a (free) video feed or at least highlights of this match?

Ok, even if that's not an everyday topic, I happened to read an article about research in that department at my old University. They're researching fluid dynamics in very thin waterfilms that are used to produce the next generation of chips (the computer kind, not the 'fish &' kind).

Yep, lots of interesting things in that field.

There is even a direct link to this thread's topic. I believe that some the "bowlers" (?) throw "curved balls"? That is direct application of fluid dynamics.

                            or in correct terminology ...

'the bowlers bowl deliveries that swing'

This is done by shining one side of the ball and letting the other side rough up. The air travels faster across the smooth side of the ball and causes it to move laterally in the air. The ideal delivery in this mode is one that swings into the batter (swings towards his legs), pitches (bounces) on the wicket and then seams (deviates) away, hopefully either bowling the batsman or catching an edge of the bat and being caught.

Sadly, I haven't found anywhere in Houston that serves proper chips - even the "British" pubs serve fries. Going to have to wait a month until I'm back in the UK.
