Except that PAL is likely to get there first

I didn't either until about a year ago. I remember reading the Blake AI Warlords Deity AW game over at CFC with Mutineer, Uberfish, Blake, Acid, and someone else where they drafted their land like crazy and thought that it seemed like a strong strategy.

I'm not a very good player, and I've got a totally dominant Immortal victory to help demonstrate how amazing drafting rifles can be.

We can draft Mellow Yellow next turn.

How does this affect the New Five Year plan the econ gurus have crafted Sooooo? In other words, doesn't drafting the city hurt our economy, or do we not want MY to grow any larger?

I never said to stop drafting, my suggestion was not to whip RH and MY. Drafting is just a single pop and easily worth it.

However, keeping all our cities at size 6 isn't a good long-term strategy. (And considering that next war will use Rifles, perhaps we should limit drafting to getting enough Oromos to garrison coastal cities.)

Drafting will not keep our cities at size 6. Our cities grow every 3-5 turns whereas we can only draft every 10 turns. Oromos are great units, even when cannon and curassiers are around.

Ok. But I still wouldn't draft any commerce cities that need to whip infrastructure. Fishing villages are probably ok to draft, but doesn't MY need more population to whip a bank?

Well yeah but the bank is just there because there's nothing much else to build. It doesn't get all that much money and is not a priority to whip.

But I agree that we shouldn't draft our good commerce cities like Saxon and Pink Dot.

By growing to size 6, Mellow Yellow only grabs a coastal tile, which is not a particularly strong one. There's absolutely no reason not to draft it.

sooooo has the right idea: we pursue growth by taking the hand off the whip for a while, and letting our cities fill out. But drafting once every 10 turns is an insanely productive use of food. Since we're already in Nationhood, it would be crazy not to take advantage of it. We need garrison troops - lots of them - and PAL is still out there too.

Okay. I did a quick garrison check.

I counted 27 cities, which is our 21 current cities, plus Lakhama, Mayapan, Uxmal, Calakmul, a city to the south of Damascus (Between Jerusalem and Acre) and a city in the NW near the clams (N of Chicen Itza)

There are 9 inland cities, and 18 coastal.
                        * 4 on the west coast (CB, GA, MY and Saxon)
                        * 5 on the north coast (CT, RH, FC, Chichen and the NW clams city)
                        * 4 on the south coast (SF, Jungle Fever, San Seb, and the unfounded Southern city)
                        * 5 on the east coast (Jerusalem, Acre, Calakmul, Mayapan and Uxmal)

So if we go with roughly 1 defender per inland city and 3 per eastern, that gives us 63 garrison troops needed.

We currently have 11 archers, 2 longbows, 1 warrior, 1 axe, 8 maces, 3 pikes and 26 oromos. This is not counting our 14 mounted units. I am going to assume that we have 8 troops that we are going to want to upgrade and serve as the backbone of our new army (Drill IV oromos, CR3 maces, etc).

So that's 44 garrison troops that we already have, meaning we need 19 more. That's assuming 4 of the archers comprise some of the coastal troops (the rest, along with the warrior and axe can be inland).

With PAL getting astronomy in 2 turns, we do need to be careful about our own boating. No city besides the recently conquered ones has more than a single garrison, and there are several coastal cities (GA, Jerusalem, Sweet Tooth) that have none.

We can draft Upper Burgundy for the first time next turn. But we can't draft GA.
