If we wait until PAL have played and then move Buttercup it has a similar affect, but we save a turn..........

freakin waste of time. (I hate religion, so feel free to ignore)
I was talking in the larger top vs bottom of tech tree sense. The immediate benefit is the Oracle slingshot to Code of Laws to access our Rathaus. The lower half of the tech tree also contains Iron Working for Swordsmen; Machinery for Crossbows; Feudalism for Longbows and Vassalage; Metal Casting for forges and the Colossus and Optics for Caravals. Being the first to circumnavigate is a big strategic bump for us.
Being the first to access these techs (because the intent is to trade them for top of tech tree techs) gives us the edge. And better to own the Apostolic Palace than suffer under the whims of the owner.

A gamble, which is down right unlikely, IMO, in multiplayer. You're more likely to get oracle to spawn something like metal casting. It typically is built too quick to pull off CoL.

Swords don't impress me. Crossbows are a ways out. Meanwhile we miss on CATAPULTS ON THE TOP HALF!!!
Feudalism for Longbows and Vassalage;
Longbows are for sissies, you can quote me on that. Vassalage: Meh.
Metal Casting for forges and the Colossus
Ok. Forges good, especially if we get a metal happy. (IIRC there was silver up north, but can't recall specifically) Colossus not so much.
and Optics for Caravals. Being the first to circumnavigate is a big strategic bump for us.
I'ld be more interested in taking care of the local situation than worrying about circumnavigation.
Being the first to access these techs (because the intent is to trade them for top of tech tree techs) gives us the edge.
Humbug.
The top half is, IMO, the better half. CATAPULTS are THE key to early warfare. Libraries, improved chopping, catapults, currency, plantations, great library, etc all unlock via the northern branch. Have I mentioned catapults?
And better to own the Apostolic Palace than suffer under the whims of the owner.
Gah. Let them declare us heathens for all I care. I'ld personally look forward to it.
Catapults.

For better or for worse, we're married to this path now it seems. If you had been here yesterday UnOrthOdOx you could have supported me in my effort to go to alphabet. As it is we're heading for our UU, whatever that is. Nobody seems willing to tell me. It goes with the Rathaus and therefore must be Austrian? I don't remember if there is an Austria any more. Ahh well, this is the path we have taken if they agree to our communication, so we might as well chum up to it. Besides, the others think its a good idea, have a little faith.

Well if we had gone with Stalin we would have had Cossacks as our UU......

Our UU:Landsknecht (Pikeman), in addition to the existing mounted bonus, it comes with +100% vs. melee units.
Very powerful UU for the times, but a catapult will wear down anything.

We will get the top half stuff also. It may just take a few extra turns as we wait for a trade.
We will get the top half if someone else keeps their end of the deal.
If you read the other thread, I was suggesting the potential that we take the top half, and then not deliver, thereby denying them catapults while we crush them with our own.
I must therefore be wary someone on their team has the same idea.

I'll get to this when I get back from work, unless someone spots that PAL have played in the meantime, and decides to do the honours.........

Well, an obvious counter is to settle near the horses and get some horse archers out.
