Well, that depends on your definition of a 'war machine' and what 'later' is to you.
PAL will be rushing someone sooner rather than later, and most often with a partner. We want to make sure it's either not us, or we make a complete mockery of their (typically poorly orchestrated) attempt.
Lets go them.
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.
I don't know any of the PAL players either.
About UnO's remark on them overpowering some civ with a partner, at least we're on the edge of the continent so we're pretty safe from a rush from several fronts early in the game. And we have the perfect UU for medieval wars.

Played the turn, and there was trouble on the horizon when I did the first move (7) for Dandelion, so keeping the general wish for staying hidden in mind I moved our scout to 9 instead of 7, because moving further northwest would almost sure have revealed Dandelion to PAL.
Btw, PAL has named their warrior goin' clubbin'.

Unfortunately, I don't have the time to do like I started to with the Templar thread right now. (or to look up the proper thread)
But, my experience with PAL members in general:
The Ladder lends itself to a rush strategy by it's very design. The types of games they play encourage short games, which in turn encourages surprise strikes on neighbors by minimizing the reaction time neighbors have.
This in turn leads to a snowball effect, successful rush = more cities = more troops = more rush, and the typical winner of a ladder game is the one who is the best rusher out of the gate.
This is a valid strategy anywhere, but particularly in ladder games, and ladder players typically play ladder games, almost exclusively, and thus hone this rush to perfection.
In Civ III, this was nearly universally a sword rush.
In Civ IV, I have seen it in many forms from archers or chariots to axes, to horses to cats/trebs at the latest.
The problem becomes that with a team comprised mostly/solely of rush perfectionists, many alternative strategies become lost, and all rests on the rush gambit. This is coupled by the fact that demogames are slower than the average ladder game, and the opponents have more time to respond to a rush threat. This can lead to ladder players underestimating the required force to pull off a successfull rush.
PAL recognizes this potential, and often attempts to garner a partner to help mitigate the risk involved. Yet, they are often easily manipulated into being the primary force, and thus assuming most of the risk.
Furthermore, where a wise general would recognize this lack of force to complete a rush, and instead parlay it into a choke/squeeze maneuver in preparation for a final assault later, I've found ladder players to either continue headlong and attempt to do as much damage as possible instead of keeping the units around as a harrassing force, or less frequently withdrawing all together.

Another thing. I checked our research output and found that we can finish Masonry in 2 turns instead of 3 if we put a citizen on a plot with 2 output. The worker will still finish in 2 turns this way.
I didn't leave it like you see on the screenshot, so currently Masonry will still finish in 3 turns. The picture is for showing the possibility to you guys.
