  • Strategy discussion about nothing

I usually try to get Judaism and then put a couple cities to trying to generate a prophet and get the building. If the religion spread I can make enough this way to maybe afford a couple more cities. I try to get it to spread by putting my second city on a river at the coast. That spreads it by sea with mapmaking and inland along the river.

However that's my single player strategy, no clue if it would work in multi.

Should we go for a religion?

    I DESPISE Religion.

Rarely/never found one. Except maybe taoism or confusianism by accident, not design.

And I certainly never invest in spreading them unless for some reason I have captured a holy city with a shrine, or for some unknown reason actually got a great prophet. (I typically avoid the prophet wonders in SP play)

Unfortunately (for you then), our main civ choice (HRE) is in a good position to grab an early religion.

I thought the main part of our reasoning for choosing HRE was so we could bag an early religion so my answer is YES we should definitely go for a religion.

The choices to begin with are of course Buddhism and Hinduism and depending on how many other teams start with Mysticism we should be able to research one of these first. Failing that I would suggest we go for Confucianism by building the Oracle. This way you not only get a religion but you also get a wonder plus the start of Great Priest with which to build your Holy Shrine.

Sometimes I try to get them all. At least one is handy to have in every game.

              What for a religion?

In SP it has great effects to diplomacy, but not against humans.

Some gold, with Holy city and shrine; but, this is only relevant with
a lot of cities,i.e., more map than civs.

Happiness from state,or free, religion and temples; that can be IMHO
the reason to grab a religion, and, if so, the sooner the better.

              My best regards,

I think we should go for Meditation, definitely. Early Monasteries will give us quite the cultural and scientific leg up. And it puts us in a good position to grab Philosophy, then Liberalism later on.

That said, we can still get the Jewish rabbis -- didn't we vote for the option players choose which religion to found when they get a religion tech first?

Depends on the mapmaker. The poll was a draw.
I sure hope the choose religion option will be enabled. At least we can pick Christianity then.
