I made a complete hash of it. I always seemed to be one or two turns behind the AI. Near the end, all that was left was trying for a space win so I put all my resources towards that goal. It looked like I had the victory in the bag until Hatty & her two lapdogs declared war on me. Since I let my army lag during my efforts to win the space race, I was an easy target. Rather than watch the slow slaughter of my empire I retired in disgust.

    Congrats to Swissy

Finding horses near-by, I decided to strike Ethiopia. This was the key to victory because Askum was my powerhouse city. I then invested in a more sizable army than usual, as I had two noted warmongers in Monty and Alex on my border. This worked well as Egypt was constantly at war with one or the other, allowing me to build a substansial tech lead over everyone else on our continent. With Alex and Monty busy I took out Persia, giving me two rather good production cities.

Once I had reserached to grenediers and cannon, I took on the Aztec/ Egypt duo. Monty had subjegated Egypt earlier and Egypt was pretty much still stuck in spearman/Longbowmen/war chariot technology. I rolled Egypt while paying off Alex to attack Monty. In the end Egypt was driven off the mainland and the Aztecs had just two mainland cities remaining. By then I was almost into modern and the others were just getting into industrial. I made peace and went into a major tech mode as I explored the continent.

The other continent was dominated by the Inca and their Spanish vassal , and a rather advanced Sumeria. The Sumerian's tech was nearly on par with mine. The Mongol soon joined the Sumerian in an alliance. At that point I decided to go straight to the spaceship.

The endgame was fairly easy. Previous games taught me the value of the anti-spy buildings and I had those in every city. I also had a nice build-up of espionage points to slow down progess on the other continent. In the end Sumeria/Mongolia had a half-dozen spaceship parts.
