    Novice Game 25 Discussion Thread

    Novice League Game 25 has closed for submissions. Please feel free to discuss your game in as much detail as you want. The more we talk, the more we can learn from each others successes and failures......

    A close run game with Traianvs just pipping duffer to the top spot!!

    1st : Traianvs : Won Domination Victory - 1838AD - 5102 points / 33395 points

    2nd : duffer : Won Domination Victory - 1856AD - 4481 points / 26306 points
    3rd : Swissy : Won Domination Victory - 1961AD - 5864 points / 14981 points

    Congrats Traianvs! Well played. Domination victory seemed the obvious choice with all those nasties around us - Hannibal, Ragnor, Stalin. And then once I got thru those Genghis Kahn & Monty! That was my first attempt at a donut map. In hindsight, I wonder if I could have exploited it with an Apostolic Victory; found a city with access to the inside sea, get an early religion, sailing & writing, and then spread your religion.

      Thanks. Looks like I finished first place on my first attempt! Perhaps I should try intermediate in Game 26 instead? Too bad only 5 people participated though, I bet a lot of people would be willing to join in. Perhaps with a bit more PR... I was not aware of the league myself until I haphazardly stumbled in this forum section.

      It was a rather special game indeed. To be honest a military victory was the only way to go in such a crowded map. Once the quest for world domination was started it was best to continue lest the enemy build up an army of their own. After gaining about 25% it was easy, because the AI never managed to succesfully conquer another AI civ. It was then only a matter of time until they all fell.

        I actually tried this game too (I try most of them), but good grief... it was painful. I eventually gave up on it since I just kept going from war to war to war without the AI's ever giving me a break!

          Yes, me too. Even if you're aware of it it can be difficult to find. Perhaps more splash on the home page with a direct link to the competition pages. I think I'll play a couple more games at this level and see how I do before jumping up.

              Maybe a reference in the main Civ4 section, temporary campaigns on the regular, OT or other forums...

              I don't know, this is a big civsite, there are loads and loads of players, but only a few participate?

                And honestly, I only noticed just now the Tri-league tab all the way on top of the page (if you don't scroll down at least). Heh.

                  I didn't like this game as it involved almost constant war. Towards the end it became a real chore to complete as it was just grinding. I did have one interesting event. The Mali offered to become my vassal as soon as I finished researching Fuedalism. They became real annoying towrds the end as they flipped a couple cities and there was nothing I could do about it. They also sent a small stack with my attack force and I had to watch as to not leave a target city to low an defenders and they would grab it in their turn.

                    Strategy

                    I believe I settled on the initial spot then sent my scout out. Two things became apparent very quickly - no space, a lot of aggressive civs around me. I wanted to get my settler out before any of my neighbors to grab that one vacant piece of land which I was able to to. Since my unique unit was the phlanx, I bent my research towards getting the phlanxes up. I researched BW with but found no copper in my territory so I then went for Iron working. Once I got IW I could then build my army.

                    My next decision was to decide who to attack first. I knew Roosevelt or Bismark were not immediate threats. Stalin, Ragner & Hannibal were all threats so which one to fight first? Basically I looked at their UU; Stalin - cossack, Ragner - Berserker, Hannibal - Numid. Since Hannibal's UU could be reached quickest I went after him. I made friends with Bismark & Isabella by adopting their religion. That plus my big army should keep everyone else at bay while I waged war with Hannibal. Hannibal had three cities I think. I took all three but managed to keep only one. I attacked Utica first & then left it empty while I sent my army north to Carthage. After I took Carthage, I then noticed Utica had flipped to Spain . I guess it was because I left it empty & they revolted but I don't know. Also, the third Carthaginian city flipped to Germany. Not a good war for me since my neighbors got most of the spoils.

                    I declared war on Roosevelt next because all he had was archers & warriors. He also had the pyramids. He went down without me loosing a single phlanx. From there I just went around the circle - Stalin, Shaka, Ragnor. Mansa Musa asked to become a vassal which I agreed to. The end came when I was at war with Huayna Capac & he agreed to become a vassal - that put me over the top.

                    Great fun!

                            I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.
