I was familiar with OCC from my days playing on the Civ4 Ladder. I knew my benefits were zero corruption and very liitle gold for maintaining my lone city. I also knew I could get a tech lead that would disapate as I approached modern era and the AI got better civics options.

Looking at the start spot I noted the fresh water on the grass hill to the SW and moved to see If there was more potential gold generating tiles that way. I settled the second turn . The alternate city site provided less hammers but more potential gold.

My strategy was simple; get all the religions in an attempt to impede the AI's progress by eliminating easy unhappiness counters; get Civil Service to enable Bureaucracy; get Military Science/Steel for my Grenedier/Cannon stack of doom.

I progressed only bulding wonders that gave me more hammers/gold/science. With all the religions, unhappiness was no problem. I was first to Liberalism, taking Astronomy. I promptly upgraded the galleys I had build and loaded my ready force of Camel Riders, Macemen, Pikemen and seige units to go introduce myself to Joao II. I struck a lightly defended city and then proceeded to rip up the countryside.

After a number of turns and two more cities, the last of which took out most of my initial force, I had my winning combo ready to sail over. With Grenediers/Cannon, the cities fell as fast as I could get to them. Joao II finaly capitulated when I had cleared the final city from his starting landmass.

      Nice write up.
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.
