  • Intermediate Game 23 Discussion Thread

Intermediate League Game 23 has closed for submissions. Please feel free to discuss your game in as much detail as you want. The more we talk, the more we can learn from each others successes and failures......

Looks like we had ourselves a conquest club meet in the intermediate league, with the vaste majority going for the bonus points too!! Ms_Summer looks a convincing winner with an early 1700's victory, while JungleIII eases into second place and crescentfresh snatches third with a latter, but stronger victory than pmonsieurs.......

    1st : Ms_Summer : Won Conquest Victory - 1710AD - 2406 points / 64767 points + (80959 points)

    2nd : JungleIII : Won Conquest Victory - 1730AD - 1870 points / 44622 points + (55778 points)
    3rd : crescentfresh : Won Conquest Victory - 1804AD - 1705 points / 25755 points + (32194 points)

    pmonsieurs : Won Conquest Victory - 1360AD - 628 points / 23430 points + (29288 points)
    Sarek : Won Conquest Victory - 1820AD - 1229 points / 15893 points X
    Chuckman : Won Cultural Victory - 2033AD - 2332 points / 3462 points + (4328 points)

    Lets hear your stories!

I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

Whatever other civ was, it must have died to barbarians. I vassalized Monty and that was it. I guess all but Sarek tried it without the great wall?

          Nice!

Interestingly - when I test played this (a few times) the darned Barbs refused to kill off one of the other civs.

I won? Didn't expect that... I guess I have to give a report... If this is a little sparse, it's due to my lack of memory. I can't even remember what I ate 2 days ago.

I figured out relatively early on that there were fewer civs than usual. So I determined that once I had controlled the barbs, I would be able to slowly expand. I also deduced that with the reduced number of civs, especially Monty and Hammy, that I would have little competition for wonder construction.

I had two cities set up and copper hooked up just in time to defend my cities from barbs. Once I got the barbs kicked out of my lands, I started expanding slowly towards Monty, to seal him off to the east and claim better lands. It was slow going, only settling when had fogbusters in place there were no immediate threat to the city. At the same time, I constructed wonders in the capital. I cottaged several cities, another several were set up for production, and one with max. food for a GP farm.

Teching was very slow going throughout the entire game, largely due to my "neighbors" (or lack thereof). By the end, I had just finished Nationalism, and no one had researched Education or Liberalism (IIRC).

At any rate, I declared war on Monty as soon as I had Guilds, and had a decent force of Samurai and Trebuchets. After conquering the western half of his territory, I vassalized him and immediately turned my attention to Hammurabi. After capturing just two cities, he was willing to capitulate in 1708 AD.

I ended up building several good wonders to help prop up the economy. These included: Stonehenge, The Pyramids, The Great Lighthouse, The Temple of Artemis (Not in the same city as the Lighthouse, however), The Hanging Gardens, The Great Library, The Parthenon, The Colossus, Shwedagon Paya, University of Sankore, The Hagia Sophia, and The Temple of Solomon. I settled almost all my GP for the permanent bonuses, and for the boost from Representation. I'm not a big fan of lightbulbing, largely due to the bulbs weakening as time goes on, while settling stays with you for the whole game, and gets bonuses from civics and wonders. (e.g. The Sistine Chapel)

All in all, pretty fun. I'm not a big fan of the AI willing to capitulate so soon. It seems to be too easy once you get the ball rolling. I did capture his capital early, so maybe that's a factor. On the other hand, you don't need to level an opponent, and then help them build back up, to have a decent vassal/ally.

thx for the report, Summer. i didnt realize there was a way to geographically seal Monty in until too late in the game, I think.

I agree on settling GP in these long games.

Hehe the barbs killed Hambo in my game, so the barb cities had impressive numbers of cottages for me to pillage.
